The US Open is heading back to Los Angeles this year as golf’s best eye glory in the third major of the summer.
Jon Rahm clinched victory at the Masters in April before Brooks Koepka excelled at Oak Hill to secure his third PGA Championship title last month.
Now, the US Open is coming up this week and the magnificent yet treacherous Los Angeles Country Club will host the action.
England’s Matt Fitzpatrick claimed a brilliant victory in Brookline last year, holding off a stellar field to win his first major title.
He’ll be back to defend his crown and will take on another superstar line-up including Rahm, Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler.
US Open 2023: Date and start time
The 123rd edition of the US Open will be held from Thursday, June 15 to Sunday, June 18.
It is taking place on the North Course of the Los Angeles Country Club in California.
Play is due to start at 12pm UK time on the opening two days and at 3pm over the weekend.
US Open 2023: How to follow
talkSPORT will have regular updates from LA throughout the week from our expert reporters Rupert Bell, Russell Hargreaves and Sean O’Brien.
The action will be shown live on Sky Sports Golf throughout the week too.
Sky Sports will begin their extended coverage on the Monday before their tournament coverage begins on Thursday morning.
US Open 2023: Course details
This will be the first major championship held at the Los Angeles Country Club and will be the first mens’ major in the LA area in 28 years.
The North Course, originally designed by George C Thomas Jr in the 1920s, was extensively restored by Gil Hanse in 2010.
It will play to a par 70 and will be a maximum of 7,449 yards in length.
It includes a daunting finish with the final three holes all being par 4s over 500 yards long.
The par 3 7th will also prove to be incredibly difficult and could play longer than the previous par 4 6th.
The tee box for the long par 5 14th is located next to the garden of the Playboy Mansion.
US Open 2023: Field and tee times
The field will be made up of 156 players before the cut on Friday night.
LIV Golf players will be involved including former champions Koepka, Bryson DeChambeau and Dustin Johnson.
Phil Mickelson, who needs US Open glory to complete the career Grand Slam, will be in action having won the PGA Championship in 2021.
The 2022 US Amateur winner Sam Bennett, who was incredibly impressive at the Masters, will tee it up again.
Tiger Woods and Will Zalatoris will not play due to injury.
A record 10,187 players entered the qualifiers to make the US Open and there will be 109 local events held from which 12 will make it to the tournament proper.
The groupings and tee times for the opening two rounds were confirmed on Monday evening and can be found here.
McIlroy will play alongside Koepka and Hideki Matsuyama while Rahm has been grouped with Xander Schauffele and Viktor Hovland.
US Open 2023: What has been said?
McIlroy, the 2011 US Open winner, believes having lower expectations paid dividends as he battled to a T7 finish at the PGA.
He said: “I feel sort of close but also so far away at the same time. It’s hard to explain. I feel like sometimes it was the worst I could have played, but then at the same time it’s like the best I could have done.
“It’s weird. It just doesn’t feel quite where it needs to be and I just need to go back home and work on some stuff. I guess just try to figure it out.
“I was more accepting of things out there and I think it’s hard. The previous major championship at Augusta, all I think about is winning, winning, winning, to try to win that green jacket.
“I then don’t really think about just playing a tournament and the cadence that goes along with getting into rounds and whatever.
“I go to the second tee on Friday afternoon and I see I’m already 10 back of Brooks or whatever. So then I’m thinking, ‘oh, geez, I have no chance of winning’, and things sort of crumble.
“It’s just like being a bit mentally fragile because you’re so focused on the one thing you’re trying to do when, in essence, you just need to play a golf tournament and see where the chips fall at the end of the week.”
