Manchester City may have beaten Tottenham Hotspur in a rearranged fixture last month, but Pep Guardiola was not happy with his players’ performance.

Spurs raced into a 2-0 lead at half-time of the game at the Etihad Stadium, before City struck four times after the interval to turn the match on its head.

Guardiola, though, was more concerned with the first-half display than he was impressed by his team’s fightback.

“I cannot deny how happy we are, but we are far away from the team that we were,” he said. 

“Not in terms of the play, but there are many things like competitiveness, in terms of what we have to do, many things where we are far away. 

“There was nothing from the stomach, from the guts, today we were lucky, but if we don’t change then sooner or later we will drop points again.”

Guardiola will therefore be looking for a much-improved display in Sunday’s return fixture. City could be eight points behind Arsenal at the top of the Premier League by the time this game kicks off, so a failure to win would be a huge blow to their title ambitions.

Tottenham will take confidence from their decent record against City in north London, but being without Antonio Conte will make things difficult for the home side.

Manchester City are looking to do the double over Tottenham Hotspur, who will be keen to avenge last month’s defeat at the Etihad Stadium.

Manchester City’s recent 4-2 victory over Tottenham was a typically entertaining encounter involving these two teams.

Over the last 12 seasons, there has been an average of 3.58 goals in head-to-head clashes between Spurs and City.

More recently, the last 10 meetings between the pair have featured 3.2 goals per match on average. There has not been a 0-0 in this fixture since August 2010.

Sunday’s showdown in north London is likely to follow a similar pattern. For one, both teams need to win.

City will probably be eight points adrift of Arsenal at kick-off, so they will be under pressure to respond to Mikel Arteta’s men.

And although Spurs are the underdogs in this match, they will be determined to give it a good go as they seek to narrow the gap to the top four.

Spurs have not been especially convincing at home of late. In each of their last five league games in front of their own fans, they have conceded two or more goals.

With Antonio Conte set to be absent after undergoing surgery for cholecystitis, City’s attacking quality could be too much for the hosts to handle.

Tottenham have by no means had everything their own way, yet their talisman has still scored 16 goals in 21 games.

Richarlison and Dejan Kulusevski have struggled with injury, and Son Heung-min has been below his best, but Kane has been as reliable as ever.

Without him, Conte’s side would be much further behind the Champions League qualification spots. No wonder Tottenham are keen to open talks over a new contract as soon as possible.

The striker insists he is fully focused on on-field matters for now – and that could be bad news for City’s defence this weekend.
