Thierry Henry stunned as Jamie Carragher calls Rio Ferdinand ‘a clown’

Jamie Carragher left Thierry Henry stunned as he labelled Rio Ferdinand a ‘clown’ for his verdict on a major incident at the San Siro.

That huge moment was when the referee overturned a decision to award Inter Milan a penalty in their Champions League semi-final.

AC Milan defender Simon Kjaer appeared to tug former Arsenal and Manchester United target Lautaro Martinez, who went down inside the penalty area, and the referee immediately pointed to the spot.

However, VAR told him to check the incident again and he overturned his original view.

The CBS Sports Golazo panel discussed the incident and tried to get Carragher to dig out some of his old teammates.

Host Kate Abdo said: “Most of us in the studio thought that was the right decision, certainly Jamie Carragher on here said it was the right decision and felt strongly about this one.”

CBS then played a clip of Carragher where he said: “Anyone out there who is watching the replay, and see what VAR do, and still believe it’s a penalty they must be a clown.”

Abdo: “Who are you calling a clown, Jamie? Well, that’s controversial. Stevie Gerrard felt they were unlucky to have their penalty claim overturned.”

Carragher then tried to defend his mate, and said: “Well he’s an attacking player. He was liable now and again to go down himself under a little bit of contact. Always contact and never a dive.”

Micah Richards: “Are you calling your mate a clown?”

Carragher: “I understand where he’s coming from. Players in my position who are defenders, other English defenders, who are commenting on the game… I can understand attackers thinking it’s a penalty.

“Stevie was an attacking player and maybe felt there was a bit of contact. As a defender we have to stick together.

“I felt some people got carried away.”

Richards: “Name names!”

Carragher: “Rio Ferdinand. I’m happy to call him a clown.”

Arsenal legend Henry could not believe Carragher had name dropped Ferdinand and his face was a picture.

Despite the penalty incident, Inter Milan still hold a strong position in the tie taking a 2-0 lead into the second leg.

For that match, they will be the designated home team against rivals AC Milan.
