Bucs head coach Todd Bowles completed his coaching staff by promoting assistant wide receivers coach Thad Lewis to quarterbacks coach. Lewis was one of the offensive assistants who Bowles retained this offseason, and he will work with new offensive coordinator Dave Canales, who was the quarterbacks coach in Seattle.
Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith, who was Canales’ pupil the last couple of years in Seattle, actually announced the news on Twitter on Tuesday afternoon. Pewter Report confirmed the news of Lewis’ promotion. He hasn’t signed his contract yet, but the team expects that he will.
My boy Thad Lewis got the Bucs QB coach job! Bro that’s crazy. So happy for the progress of everyone in our camp.
I was a freshman in HS starting QB on varsity and went to watch HML v Northwestern and Thad was QB at HML.
3 years ago we spoke this up!

The 34-year old Lewis joined the Bucs coaching staff in 2021 after serving as an intern in 2020. Lewis is regarded as one of the brightest minds on the coaching staff and is highly thought of by both Bowles and former head coach Bruce Arians. He has worked with former wide receivers coach Kevin Garver, and now will get to be a full-time position coach for the first time.
“He’s a former quarterback,” Arians told Pewter Report. “He’s extremely bright. [In 2021] I used to make him give me game plans. What would his game plan be? It would be spot on every week. There will be a time very, very soon where he’s calling plays in this league.”

Thad Lewis, an Opa-locka, Fla. native, was a four-year starter at quarterback for Duke (2006-09), where he set school records for career passing yards (10,065) and passing touchdowns (67) and added nine rushing touchdowns. He also set Duke’s program record for most consecutive pass attempts without an interception at 206. He was a finalist for the Davey O’Brien Award – presented to the nation’s top quarterback – in his senior season in 2009.
Lewis then went on to spend parts of eight seasons in the NFL (2010-17) with the St. Louis Rams, Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Buffalo Bills, Houston Texans, Philadelphia Eagles, San Francisco 49ers and Baltimore Ravens. He played in seven career games, making six starts, recording 115 completions for 1,296 passing yards and five passing touchdowns, adding one rushing touchdown.
After his playing days were over, he spent two years as an offensive analyst at UCLA working under Chip Kelly from 2018-19. Then, Lewis interned with the Bucs in 2020, where he made a strong impression on Arians, who hired him to replace Antwaan Randle El as the assistant receivers coach last year.
Now, Lewis will be charged with helping to develop Kyle Trask, the team’s 2021 second-round pick, as well the other quarterbacks that Tampa Bay will acquire this offseason. The Bucs are expected to add a pair of veterans – possibly Seattle backup Drew Lock and a more experienced QB – to challenge Trask for the starting job in 2023.
