Southampton vs Liverpool predictions
For the first time since 2016/17, Liverpool will not be playing in the Champions League next season.
In truth, they did well to remain in the conversation for so long. After a 2-2 draw with Arsenal – their fourth consecutive game without a win – on April 9, Jurgen Klopp’s side fell 12 points adrift of the top four.
At that stage it looked like Europa League qualification would be the best Liverpool could hope for.
Then came a seven-game winning streak which suddenly propelled Klopp’s team back into contention, especially as Newcastle United and Manchester United both began to drop points around the same time.
In the end a 1-1 draw with Aston Villa last weekend proved costly. Had Liverpool won that match, they would still have a chance of the top four heading into gameweek 38.
In reality, though, the Reds had given themselves too much to do. Relying on winning nine consecutive matches to have even a sniff of Champions League football proved to be too tall an order.
Their recent upturn in form has at least given Liverpool a sense of momentum to carry into what could be a pivotal summer.
If they get things right off the pitch in the coming months, there is no reason why Klopp’s team cannot challenge for the Premier League title again next term.
Before then, they will be keen to end 2022/23 in positive fashion by beating Southampton on Sunday.
Southampton vs Liverpool betting tips
Southampton have not been good enough this season and Liverpool should come out on top at St Mary’s.
Liverpool to win to nil – 2/1 (bet365)
One of the main reasons for Liverpool’s regression this season has been their relative defensive porousness.
When they pushed Manchester City all the way in a tight title race last term, the Reds conceded 26 goals in 38 matches.
They had already shipped more than that after just 22 games this time around. As things stand Liverpool’s backline has been breached 43 times – a 65 percent increase on last year.
Several individual defenders have had difficult moments throughout this campaign, but the entire structure of the team has contributed to Liverpool’s increased leakiness.
The midfield is in urgent need of a revamp in the summer, while the pressing from the front has not been as effective without Sadio Mane.
Had Alisson Becker, who has probably been Liverpool’s standout performer in 2022/23, not been available for long stretches, things would have been even worse.
There have been signs of improvement of late, however. Klopp has reconfigured his side, most notably by moving Trent Alexander-Arnold into central areas when Liverpool have possession.
The Reds have conceded just one goal in their last four outings and they have a good chance of keeping a 15th clean sheet of the season at St Mary’s.
Liverpool -2 handicap – 9/4 (bet365)
Southampton supporters have had little to cheer this season.
Their team did the double over Chelsea and were one of only two teams to avoid defeat by Arsenal (the other being Manchester City), but it has otherwise been a disappointing season for the south coast side.
Premier League mainstays over the last decade, the Saints will be playing in the Championship next season for the first time since 2012.
Whatever happens on Sunday, Southampton will finish bottom. And they are going out of the top flight with a whimper, having collected just three points from the last 36 on offer.
The club confirmed this week that Ruben Selles will not be at the helm in 2023/24, so this will be the Spaniard’s final game in charge.
If they make some sensible decisions in the summer, there is no reason why Southampton cannot bounce straight back to the Premier League.
They have some talented young players on the books and are not facing post-relegation financial catastrophe.
But there is no doubt that Southampton have not been good enough this season and we could see further evidence of that this weekend.
This should be a reasonably comfortable assignment for Liverpool, who have won each of their last three away games to improve what was previously a pretty underwhelming record at opposition grounds.
A victory by a two-goal margin or more should be well within their grasp.
Mohamed Salah to score any time – 10/11 (bet365)
Mohamed Salah needs one more goal to reach 20 in the Premier League for the season. He has finished below that milestone only once before – surprisingly, in 2019/20 when Liverpool won the title.
This has been a season of flux for the Reds, especially in attack.
In the second half of last term, Klopp favoured a front three of Salah, Mane and Luis Diaz. But Mane was sold to Bayern Munich last summer and Diaz has spent a large chunk of the campaign on the treatment table.
There has not been much in the way of consistency of selection in forward areas, but Salah has thrived regardless.
Liverpool’s Mr Reliable can always be depended upon to deliver, and we fancy his chances of going out on a high this weekend.
Salah has scored seven goals in his last nine appearances and he can add at least one more to his tally against Southampton.
