Phillies Play Monday – 23 Immediate Takeaways from Jets 20, Eagles 14

A dog fight with the Jets. That’s how we spent our Sunday evening, watching the Eagles turn the ball over four times and miss a fourth quarter field goal. They had 700 chances to put those bums away and couldn’t do it. Credit to the defense for playing well, but the offense was horrendous. A much-deserved loss.

1) As an homage to Mark Sanchez doing color commentary, both teams should have run the “butt fumble” at least once.

2) Jason Kelce started his 145th straight game. Couldn’t think of a better player to set a new franchise record.

3) Jalen Hurts stiff-arming Michael Carter while running to his right and picking out A.J. Brown in stride was one of the cooler things you will see all season. Unfortunately got lost in a bad performance overall.

4) Lane Johnson going down is always no bueno, but the right side of the line for most of this game ended up being two backups in Jack Driscoll and Sua Opeta. Driscoll seemed like he was having a lot of trouble over there at right tackle. Not great! Cam Jurgens is already on IR, so if Johnson has to miss any significant amount of time, watch out.

5) That third down conversion on the first drive was really pretty. You had pre-snap orbit motion, then an RPO with the passing option being the 2nd running back. This is 21 personnel with two backs, two receivers, and a tight end:

6) I’m on the 40-second YouTube TV delay or whatever it is, but kept thinking to myself during the commercial break that Hurts was in on that 1st quarter lunge. From the back angle, you could tell he hadn’t touched down before crossing the ball over the line. Just because Olamide Zaccheaus is grabbing at the ball doesn’t mean it came loose before Hurts broke the plane:

7) 19 plays, 91 yards, 9:47 off the clock on that first scoring drive. They went 3-4 on third down and moved the sticks eight times on the drive.

8) Dunno if it was some sort of optical illusion or what, but that opening Jets field goal did NOT look good. They finally showed the replay coming out of the break and Greg Zuerlein barely squeezed it through, just above the left upright.

9) Surprised to see DeVonta Smith drop that 2nd down slant. Even more surprised to see the second drop, with nobody on him. Honestly cannot remember the last time he dropped a pass, let alone two in one game.

10) That screen pass fumble/interception was excruciating. New York blitzed the entire left side, Hurts got the ball to Dallas Goedert with three blockers in front, and the only Jet dipshit even capable of making a play forced a fumble. That play would have gone for 15+ yards.

11) Too many COMMERCIALS. FOX always does this thing where they give you an incomplete replay, or no replay at all, then they cut to break, so you have to wait three minutes before getting a different angle with commentary. It’s brutal. It kills the flow of the game and minimizes impactful moments. It should be illegal for FOX to do this.

12) Not sure what else there is to say about A.J. Brown at this point. He reminds me of Terrell Owens. Just a consistent, big-bodied receiver who catches everything thrown his way. That 49-yard catch and run in the second quarter was beautiful and then the sideline catch in the second half was even better.

13) D’Andre Swift giveth and taketh in the passing game. 5 catches, 31 yards, and a touchdown on the first three drives, then he fumbled when the Birds were moving the ball with a double-up opportunity right before halftime.

14) That Allen Lazard blindside block and ensuing drop was a gift. Pushed the Jets back to 3rd and 23 when they were moving down the field and into scoring position. New York ended up taking a delay of game penalty and then punting it away instead of trying a long FG attempt.

15) Kenneth Gainwell should have caught that 3rd quarter pass to move the sticks. Another drop.

16) Biggest play of the game SHOULD have been Haason Reddick’s open field sack. Not gonna lie, I was having some angina before that sequence, but it really halted New York’s momentum. He’s been really good since the thumb wrapping came off.

17) I don’t have anything to say about the Jalen Hurts second half interception. They were moving the ball well on that drive and looked like they were going to respond to New York’s fourth field goal. Instead, nothing.

18) Nick Sirianni needs to grow the beard out again.

19) Eagles’ run/pass split was about 70/30. Andy Reid-esque. The Jets were down bad in the secondary, but still, they made themselves one dimensional and didn’t do their typical clock controlling with the run game.

20) Sanchez was pissing me off during the 4th quarter A.J. Brown catch and review. Filthy, dirty, biased Jet. Can’t imagine how disappointed he was when the call was confirmed on the field.

21) Jake Elliott’s second miss of the year. Lovely.

22) The third Hurts interception was just a total abomination. Stared Goedert down the entire way.

23) MetLife is the NFL’s worst stadium.
