Paul Reed will Remain a Sixer

The 76ers are matching Paul Reed’s three-year, $23M offer sheet with the Jazz, sources tell ESPN. Per sheet’s terms, Sixers must guarantee last two years of Reed’s deal if they win the opening round of playoffs this season.

This was not expected. It sure seemed like the Sixers were not going to match after bringing in Mo Bamba and re-signing Montrezl Harrell on a one-year deal. Throw in the fact that conditional trigger on the guaranteed years, plus the luxury tax implications, and it just felt like one of those situations where the offer sheet was not going to be matched.

Instead, back comes BBall Paul, which is first and foremost a win in the optics department. After letting guys like Isaiah Joe and Charles Bassey depart for nothing, the Sixers instead commit to a young draft pick who has been with the organization from the start. Reed is certainly an energetic guy off the bench who has proven to be a capable Joel Embiid backup and spot starter when necessary. With the way the roster shapes up, there will be some opportunities to play him at the four as well, which should be intriguing. He is not a shooter but we shall see if Nick Nurse can concoct something that works, ala the Marc Gasol/Serge Ibaka pairing he used against the Sixers in the 2019 playoffs.

Contract wise, we’re looking at 3 years for about $23 million. Reed can veto trades for the first season. He’s back. We’re out the mud and hopefully out of foul trouble as well.
