NHL Devils vs Hurricanes Same Game Parlay picks: Hughes back on the board in win (+500)

New Jersey Devils center Jack Hughes

The Hurricanes dealt the Devils their third 5-1 loss of these playoffs in Game 1 on Wednesday night. New Jersey has responded well to adversity thus far this postseason. While they would rather avoid adversity in the first place, they now know they can overcome it. They will give the Hurricanes a heck of a push in Game 2 to avoid going home needing to win 4 of 5 games. This will be a tightly played, intense matchup.

Devils win (-105)

The Devils lost on Wednesday by a score 5-1 just like last round when they lost Game 1 to the Rangers 5-1. They then lost Game 2 once again 5-1. But then the Devils won 4 out of the next 5 games in dominant fashion. They would rather not take the chance of going down 2-0 in the series once again. It worked out once. Chances are not great that they would get away with it again. Carolina will get their biggest push so far from New Jersey on Friday.

Lindy Ruff and the Devils made extremely effective adjustments after getting outscored 10-2 by the Rangers in the aforementioned first-round games. They held a talented, veteran-ridden Rangers team to 1 or no goals in 4 of the following 5 games. Carolina is top-heavy and arguably does not have the offensive pedigree the Rangers had. If the Devils can repeat those same adjustments against the Hurricanes, there is no reason they can’t shut Carolina down as well and take Game 2.

Under 6.5 goals (-210)

The Devils have either scored or allowed 4+ goals in 6 of their 8 games played this postseason. Despite that, their game totals have averaged a total of 5.00. New Jersey for the most part won big or lost big which has somewhat oddly still resulted in lower totals. The Devils had the NHL’s 8th-best goal prevention and the Hurricanes ranked 18th in the league in goals scored per game. A good chunk of that production included Andrei Svechnikov who is shelved for the season. New Jersey should do their part in keeping the total low just like in the 1st round.

The Hurricanes had even better goal prevention than the Devils as they ranked 2nd in the NHL in goals allowed per game. Their average game total in the regular season was 5.76 and in the postseason is 5.28. The pure matchup between these teams has the makings of a low total. Pushing this out a goal for an alternate total of 6.5 gives a good added cushion while contributing to a good value on the parlay.

Jack Hughes anytime goal scorer (+160)

During the regular season, Jack Hughes had 3 goals and 2 assists in 4 games against this Carolina team that as mentioned, is elite at preventing high-quality chances. Going pointless on Wednesday, Hughes now averages a point per game against the Hurricanes and their strong goal prevention. With each playoff game this 21-year-old playoff rookie plays, the more experience he gets in playoff-style hockey. He is adjusting on the fly and is due for a bounce back.

Playoff experience is so valuable and is something that Hurricanes Captain Jordan Staal has had since the 2006-2007 season. He showed it on Wednesday when he very successfully shadowed Hughes. Staal was instrumental in Carolina holding the youngster to no points, 2 shots, and a -3 rating while Staal had 2 points and a +3 rating. At some point, Hughes will utilize his youth, speed, and hockey IQ to adjust to those 34-year-old legs chasing him around out there. It might as well be tonight for a 2nd round coming-out party.
