The season’s first Merseyside Derby takes place on Saturday afternoon with both teams occupying opposing ends of the table.

Liverpool head into the Premier League weekend fourth in the table after their 2-2 draw at Brighton just before the international break.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are just three points off the top of the table and can reach the top of the league with a win on Saturday, for a couple of hours at least.

The Reds had won seven matches in a row before they fell to defeat at Tottenham three weeks ago, and are now winless in their last two league games heading into Saturday’s derby.

Everton started the season very slowly, picking up just one point from their opening five matches, but have since won three of their last four in all competitions to help lift them out of the relegation zone.

Sean Dyche’s side, who looked certain for another relegation scrap come May having only survived on the final day of last season and the penultimate day the year before, have now climbed up to 16th and looking up the table, stark contrast to just a few weeks ago.

The Toffees are now three points clear of the relegation zone with a much healthier goal difference than those below them, and a win at their biggest rivals on Saturday would lift to within two points of the top half of the table before other teams take the field.

Everton have only lost one of their five away games all season, winning three of them and will back themselves to cause an upset to kick off the weekend.

Klopp has a good record against the Toffees though, losing just one of the 17 matches he’s managed against them, and has only lost twice in 13 games against Dyche in their careers.

Everton have only won one Merseyside Derby in all competitions since 2010, 28 matches ago, and have won only once at Anfield this century.
