Buried in two debilitating losses is the fact the NFL isn’t protecting Jalen Hurts from taking unnecessary shots. Last night he took a knee to the ribs after he already gave himself up:

No flag. You can even see the D-end wave his arms, pleading with the official for no flag.
It wasn’t as egregious as this one in the Cowboys game last week from Markquese Bell:
Hurts is giving himself up and Bell isn’t even in the frame yet:
Sure these are bang-bang plays, but you gotta be out of your mind to think Patrick Mahomes wouldn’t get the benefit of the doubt on either run. Maybe Hurts has to do a little more embellishment to get the flag. But for a league that isn’t shy about penalizing a team at the first sign of unnecessary roughness, it’s insane neither have been called.

THIS might be the worst “Unnecessary Roughness” penalty I’ve ever seen. What happened to the game I love?? pic.twitter.com/OMKezNZoaq

Exhibit B:

And then you have plays like this one from Saturday that go uncalled:

I understand reffing is a tough job and we don’t expect them to be perfect, but is it too much to ask for them to at least be consistent? They’re all over the place. It’s like the Jason Kelce false start last night. I know he took blame for it, saying the officials have been warning him for years. But is it just a coincidence they finally flag him for it during the most controversial play of the NFL season? Absolutely not. Every single center moves the ball to gain an advantage. Did you know it’s also illegal for the center to spin the ball after it’s placed? Well he’s been doing that his entire career too and never been flagged. It’s just the NFL is so zeroed in on the Brotherly Shove that referees are looking for anything they can do penalize the Eagles. It’s why they’ve fucked up multiple times this season confusing Kelce’s arm for Landon Dickerson’s:
Jason Kelce claims the refs were “searching” for a penalty to call against the #Eagles QB sneak when Landon Dickerson got called for “offensive offsides”

That’s the second time this season the refs have called offsides thinking Jason Kelce’s hand was Landon Dickerson’s pic.twitter.com/tooH3CSPe8

The league sends these memos out and these refs just zero in on whatever the flavor of the week is. Howie better be sending these clips of Hurts getting roughed up straight to Goodell today. Because it’s not like this is new this season. There were like five late hits in that Lions game last year that weren’t flagged:
Jalen Hurts was hit late several times by the Lions on Sunday before it was finally called. You’re not supposed to be able to belly flop on a sliding QB. pic.twitter.com/PPhDO0SUmS
