AEW Double or Nothing Matches and Predictions

There are nine matches on the main Double or Nothing Card, as well as match that will stream for free on YouTube during the “Buy-In” leading up to the PPV.

While the order of the card is unknown, let’s take a look at the matches in reverse order:

The Hardys & Hook vs. The Gunns & “All Ego” Ethan Page

In a last-minute change that came on Friday’s Rampage, Isiah Kassidy’s replacement was announced. FTW Champion Hook will join Jeff and Matt Hardy in the lone “Buy-In” match ahead of Double or Nothing. If you’re wondering why the Hardys are taking on three members of the now-defunct faction of The Firm after “The Firm Deletion”, don’t feel bad. It doesn’t make sense.

It’s a strange way to reunite the Hardys in the ring alongside on of the company’s young stars, but it’ll gain some eyes and attention on YouTube leading up to the PPV. The Gunns, who previously held the tag team titles, will bring the energy, Page will bring the ego, but this match will end the only way it should.

Prediction: The Hardys & Hook def. The Gunns & “All Ego” Ethan Page

TBS Championship Match: Jade Cargill (c) vs. Taya Valkyrie

Follow a series of squash matches, Jade Cargill enters Double or Nothing at 59-0 in AEW. Taya Valkyrie’s first shot at the TBS Championship didn’t go her way, as she was barred from using the Road to Valhalla. That’s not the case on Sunday, making this matchup the first of Jade Cargill’s title reign that comes with the feeling of uncertainty.

Still, Jade has the star look –something Warner Bros. Discovery has built around– and while Taya will put in a hell of an effort, this will probably be Jade’s 60th win. Ultimately, it still feels like the person who will take the title is Kris Statlander when she returns from injury.

Prediction: Jade Cargill (c) def. Taya Valkyrie

AEW International Championship Match: Blackjack Battle Royale

It wouldn’t be Double or Nothing without a battle royale of some sort. International Champion Orange Cassidy will put his title on the line against 20 competitors. In a somewhat surprising move, there’s been no mention of a “joker”, which has become synonymous with this type of match at this PPV.

There are plenty of stories to follow within the match. Keith Lee and Dustin Rhodes will inevitably run into Swerve Strickland and Brian Cage. Bullet Club Gold’s “Switchblade” Jay White and “Rock Hard” Juice Robinson will likely target “Absolute” Ricky Starks. Throw in The Butcher & The Blade, The Best Friends, The Lucha Bros, Bandido, Komander, Lee Moriarty, Big Bill, Ari Daivari, Tony Nese, and Kip Sabian, and there’s sure to be chaos. Getting the belt onto Big Bill would be huge for his character, but this should come down to some combination of Swerve, Jay White, and Ricky Starks.

Prediction: “Switchblade” Jay White wins the AEW International Championship

AEW World Trios Championship: Open House Rules Match

The House of Black will put their AEW World Trios titles on the line in an Open House Rules match. The Acclaimed and “Daddy Ass” Billy Gunn appeared to throw their hat in the ring on Rampage, which should make for an interesting clash-of-styles matchup.

After rumors of discontent with their positioning and creative, The House of Black have been one of the most interesting factions in AEW of late. The lighting in the Open House Rules matches has been eye-catching and the in-ring work has been superb. The Acclaimed and Billy Gunn should give the HoB a run for their money, but there’s absolutely no reason to mess with something that’s working.

Prediction: The House of Black def. The Acclaimed & “Daddy Ass” Billy Gunn

TNT Championship Ladder Match: Wardlow (c) vs. Christian Cage

Wardlow’s first reign was underwhelming and this one has been hit-or-miss. There are two ways of looking at this matchup. If the goal is to get Wardlow over with notable wins, picking one up against a ladder match legend is a good place to start.

There’s reason to believe, however, that this is the moment for Christian Cage to hold some AEW gold. With the debut of AEW Collision just over two weeks away, it’s never a bad thing to have championship belts on recognizable competitors. The TNT media blitz ahead of Collision would be a logical reason to switch the title. The only downside is if Jay White wins as outlined above, and MJF retains, all three of the men’s singles titles would be on heels.

Prediction: Christian Cage def. Wardlow (c)

AEW Women’s World Championship Match: Jamie Hayter (c) vs. Toni Storm

The AEW Women’s World Championship will be on the line as Jamie Hayter and Toni Storm run back one of the best women’s matches in the company’s history. The problem is that Hayter reportedly has a serious injury. The injury could either jeopardize tonight’s match or lead to a quick title change.

Toni Storm was an underrated champion whose reign was marred by the “interim” tag. Although Tony Khan eventually changed the record to install her as a permanent champion, it would be interesting to see her go on a run as a heel. Could she drop it intentionally to The Outcasts’ leader Saraya? Finger of Doom 2.0?

Prediction: Toni Storm def. Jamie Hayter (c)

AEW World Tag Team Championship Match with Special Guest Referee Mark Briscoe: FTR (c) vs. Jay Lethal & Jeff Jarrett

There were audible groans when it became apparent that Jay Lethal and Jeff Jarrett would be FTR’s challengers for the AEW World Tag Team Championships. While there’s still some lingering TNA odor on the duo, Jeff Jarrett is arguably the best heel currently working in the business. Jay Lethal’s booking has been questionable since becoming All Elite, but the duo should put on a great match with FTR.

Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler had the best year of their careers in 2022, simultaneously holding the AAA World Tag Team titles, ROH World tag titles, and the IWGP Heavyweight tag titles. After months of rumors, they re-upped with AEW rather than heading back to the WWE. One has to hope that a great match against two pros will be the way to gain back momentum as The Hardys, The Acclaimed, and others eye the tag belts. The only way things go sideways is if special guest referee Mark Briscoe does the unthinkable and helps J&J.

Prediction: FTR (c) def. Jay Lethal & Jeff Jarrett

Unsanctioned Match with Special Enforcer Sabu: Chris Jericho vs. Adam Cole

Here’s where things get really interesting. Given the presence of Anarchy in the Arena on the Double or Nothing Card, there’s a case to be made that this unsanctioned match could be largely redundant. As such, don’t be surprised if Jericho and Cole lead off the show, allowing for plenty of time between this and the Anarchy in the Arena match.

Jericho and Cole have built a decent story leading into this one, and the injection of ECW legend Sabu could make this match even crazier than it would otherwise be. One thing to keep an eye on is the potential for fire. Back in 1992, Sabu and his uncle The Sheik took on Atsushi Onita and Tarzan Goto in a Flaming Barbed Wire Match. Jericho has terrorized the locker room over the past year or so with fireballs to the face. Could Sabu light one up and help Cole secure the victory?

Prediction: Adam Cole def. Chris Jericho

Anarchy in the Arena: The Elite vs. Blackpool Combat Club

The Elite and the Blackpool Combat Club will engage in a tremendously-violent Anarchy in the Arena match at Double or Nothing. The reunion of The Elite came a couple of weeks ago, when “Hangman” Adam Page returned one week after Don Callis betrayed his long-time protege Kenny Omega wit ha screwdriver to the head at the end of a cage match against Jon Moxley.

Moxley’s presence in this match ensures there will be blood and a lot of it. There are other notes to keep in mind. Will Callis factor into the result? Will Konosuke Takeshita return, betray The Elite, and join the BCC? Could rumors of Kota Ibushi’s debut in AEW come to fruition and even the sides? This feels like it’s going to end with Blood and Guts.

Prediction: Blackpool Combat Club def. The Elite

AEW World Championship: MJF (C) vs. “Jungle Boy” Jack Perry vs. Darby Allin vs. Sammy Guevara

The Four Pillars will meet in what would normally be the main event of any PPV. The issue, again, is the presence of two incredibly violent matches that will be hard to follow. Another issue, one that some don’t want to acknowledge, is the four participants. MJF’s title reign got off to a clunky start after CM Punk’s All Out injury and the “Fallout from Brawl Out” afterwards.

While it’s commendable to want to work in the other pillars, the angle’s felt shallow. Weeks ago, it was clear that the money match was a singles bout between MJF and Darby Allin. Sting cut a promo that gave Darby the rub and the potential clash a big match feel. Sammy Guevara has gone from heel to a tweener. “Jungle Boy” Jack Perry’s mic work still leaves a lot to be desired. Yet, all four have proven to be excellent performers.

A world championship should inherently be the match of the night. Given the other matches on this card, that’ll hard to attain in a stipulation-free four-way match. If they can pull it off, it’ll truly be a monumental feat. Keep an eye on Jungle Boy. A heel turn aligning himself with MJF would add one heck of a wrinkle to this storyline and bide time for an MJF vs. CM Punk rematch down the line.

Prediction: MJF (c) def. “Jungle Boy” Jack Perry, Darby Allin, and Sammy Guevara
