Eleven years ago Tottenham lost an epic battle with arch opponents West Ham and Spurs fans couldn’t have been more delighted.
It was in January, 2012 that the north London club discovered they’d missed out on their bid for the Olympic Stadium. Which left the coast clear for the outfit from East Ham to make the short trek to Stratford.
So Tottenham kept it local, and built their magnificent new abode. Which they could really call home when the inaugural first team goal was scored in April, 2019 against Crystal Palace. By their South Korean star, and favourite son, Heung-Min Son.
Of course this wasn’t the first time that Son had lit up the Spurs faithful. And it was by no means the last. In his 350 plus games for the club, he has, at various times, won the Puskas award for goal of the season (his marathon run and finish against Burnley), been selected in the PFA team of the year, and was a joint Golden Boot winner with Mo Salah.
However, this season has not followed in the seemingly endless tradition of him being Spurs’ Sonny delight. So far, it’s been a campaign comprising a goal-shy start, injury, a World Cup break and recent streaky form.
Indeed, so much has his game dropped off, talkSPORT pundit Jamie O’Hara pondered after Tuesday’s 1-0 loss to AC Milan ‘what’s happened to the world-class player?’
A question that could just as easily be levelled at Antonio Conte’s side. Who, a couple of good wins aside, have also had a sticky couple of months.
Nevertheless, at home on Sunday afternoon, both team and player have the opportunity to start putting things right against their old rivals from the East. West Ham do, though, bring recent good form.
While their track record at Tottenham since the Claret and Blues were green lit for the Olympic Stadium has been decent.
So this would clearly be the perfect time for Spurs’ Son to shine once again.
