Former Bucs tight end and future Hall of Famer Rob Gronkowski has been enjoying his second retirement. While immersed in a number of businesses and events, Gronk is still dedicates time to media appearances to break down the NFL.
Gronkowski has been a regular on Kay Adams’ show “Up & Adams,” where he made another appearance on Wednesday. It’s been a while since we heard Gronk discuss his former team, but the Bucs were front and center during his conversation with Adams.
It’s a bit odd to hear him talk about a Bucs quarterback who isn’t Tom Brady, but he was asked for his opinion on Tampa Bay’s competition between Baker Mayfield and Kyle Trask heading into OTAs and training camp.
Gronk Weighs In On Bucs’ QB Battle
Going into this, Gronk doesn’t really have much loyalty to either side. Sure, he has plenty of teammates still on the team from his Bucs playing career for the 2020 and 2021 season, but he spent just one season with Trask and obviously has never played with Mayfield before. When making a prediction for who’ll win the battle, Gronk went with the veteran.
“I think Baker will win the quarterback position,” Gronkowski said. “I think he’ll be the starting quarterback for the Tampa Bay Bucs going into the season. The only way I see the Bucs pulling him is if he just absolutely plays horrendous, which I don’t think he will.”
Many are doubting that the Bucs will go anywhere this season. Some have them ranked 31st in the league, while many betting websites have the Bucs winning under six games and finishing last in the NFC South. That’s not how the legendary tight end sees it, though. He is very optimistic about what Tampa Bay can do with Mayfield behind center.
“I think the Bucs are going to put him in a position to succeed,” Gronkowski said. “There will be competition between him and Kyle Trask during the training camp, which they want. They need Kyle to have that competition to bring the best out of him. He knew he wasn’t going to play behind Tom (Brady), so sometimes you can relax when you know you’re in that position.
“But this is the time to compete for a starting job for both of them. I believe Baker will win it in the end, he’ll be put in the position to succeed. He’s got great teammates around him – Chris Godwin, Mike Evans at receiver, they got a great defense around them.”
Bucs Making The Postseason?
Gronkowski has a strict plan for Mayfield. If he sticks to it, he sees the Bucs returning to the playoffs for the fourth year in a row.
“I would just say Baker just needs to be the Baker that he was when he was with the Rams,” Gronk said. “He doesn’t need to be a hero, just protect the ball and don’t turn it over and he will succeed and the Tampa Bay Bucs will be going to the playoffs.”
