Renowned tipster and Journalist, Ed Quigley aka ‘Longshot Ted’ shares his best bets on a cracking Saturday of sport, including the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket
Ted’s Bets – Saturday tips
- Goodwood 1.55 – Potapova – bet with Tote
- Goodwood 3.05 – Maghlaak- bet with bet365
- Newmarket 4.00 – Twilight Calls – bet with Spreadex
- Uttoxeter 4.25 – Nestor Park – bet with BetUK
- Newmarket 4.40 – Holloway Boy – bet with William Hill
Goodwood 1.55 – Potapova
This looks like a golden opportunity for POTAPOVA to get back in the winners’ enclosure. Richard Kingscote and Sir Michael Stoute combine with the 5-year-old who was a Group 3 winner last term. On the figures she has a fair bit in hand on this occasion, and providing she is fully wound up on her seasonal reappearance, she may just have too much class for her rivals dropping down into Listed company. The yard have been in fine fettle lately and she can get the job done here en route to bigger things this summer.

Goodwood 3.05 – Maghlaak
Lightly-raced 4-year-old MAGHLAAK didn’t make it to the track as a juvenile, but is progressing nicely and can have a fruitful campaign. He shaped with promise when third at Kempton on debut last August (form has worked out well) and subsequently has notched up back-to-back wins. The latter of those coming over course and distance, where he showed real battling qualities for one so inexperienced, knuckling down inside the closing stages to fend off all-comers despite having to do the donkey work in a five-runner race.
Based on that performance, a bit of cut in the ground shouldn’t be a problem, and he can take his form to new levels now foraying into Handicap company. Off the mark of 86, he has the propensity to be well-treated and connections could be eyeing up Royal Ascot on the back of a strong performance here.

Newmarket 4.00 – Twilight Calls
Henry Candy and Ryan Moore team up with TWILIGHT CALLS who can fend off all comers in the Group 3 Palace House Stakes over 5f. The 5-year-old is a previous winner over course and distance, so should enjoy returning to this venue. Relatively lightly raced, he could still have more to offer for an in-form yard who have been operating at around a 30% strike rate for the last fortnight.
Some people may be put off by the gelding trying to defy a 326-day absence, but that is a positive as far as his profile is concerned. He’s won first-time out for the last two seasons, so catching him fresh is probably the time for him to bring his best stuff to the table. He hasn’t been seen since coming second to Nature Strip in the Group 1 King’s Stand Stakes at last year’s Royal Ascot meeting. A reproduction of that effort would see him tough to beat down in class for this encounter.
Uttoxeter 4.25 – Nestor Park e/w
This is a cracking 3m Handicap Chase which can go the way of the Ben Pauling-trained NESTOR PARK. The 10-year-old has sometimes flattered to deceive, but when he puts his best foot forward he is more than capable of making his presence felt.
He ran a race full of encouragement when runner-up at Chepstow last month. Three miles around Uttoxeter should be spot on for him and he can get involved for each-way players with Luca Morgan in the saddle. Caribean Boy bounced back to form at Cheltenham recently and if in the same form could easily follow up, despite a 5lb rise in the weights.
Newmarket 4.40 – Holloway Boy e/w
The 2000 Guineas will be a humdinger, where Auguste Rodin heads the market at around 2/1. He looks the part, and his two-year-old form stacks up well, but there are a whole host of unexposed challengers taking him on. One horse who was behind him when they met at Doncaster last season was the Karl Burke-trained HOLLOWAY BOY. On the face of it, the Karl Burke-trained 3-year-old has a bit of ground to make up with the Aidan O’Brien-trained hotpot.
However, the testing ground wouldn’t have suited Holloway Boy when they met on Town Moor, so fingers crossed ground conditions are much quicker for Saturday. When he won the Chesham at Royal Ascot, underfoot conditions were on the quicker side. To win the Chesham on debut takes some doing, and it may just be that first time out is the time to catch this individual. He has run well at Newmarket before, and with Christophe Soumillon in the saddle, it would be no surprise to see the duo outrun their odds. A strongly run mile on quick ground at Newmarket should play to his strengths, and he rates an each-way player.
Don’t forget to check out Ted’s Bets for Sunday, as the 1000 Guineas takes centre-stage at Newmarket.
