Former Sixers GM Billy King Assisting in Flyers’ Search for the Next President of Hockey Operations

The changes in leadership for the Philadelphia Flyers have been coming fast and furious in the past month, and the search for a new President of Hockey Operations has kicked into high gear.

Crossing Broad has learned that new Comcast-Spectacor CEO Dan Hilferty has compiled a search committee that includes President and CEO of Business Operations Valerie Camillo and a couple of other familiar names to the Philadelphia Sports landscape – Billy King and Neil Glasberg.

The more recognizable name is King, who served as President and General Manager of the 76ers during a tenure that spanned 1998 through 2007. He was also GM of the Brooklyn Nets from 2010-2016 before venturing off into the world of broadcast media as an analyst on NBA TV and as an erstwhile co-host on WIP with Angelo Cataldi and the morning team.

Since leaving both networks, King has joined Modern Executive Solutions, a consultancy company that focuses on helping companies hire executives. King serves as a senior partner and is the head of their sports and entertainment division.

Glasberg, you may recall, is the founder and president of The Coaches Agency, and the owner of PBI Sports and Entertainment, and was a consultant the Flyers worked with when hiring current coach John Tortorella, who had at one time been a client of PBI.

According to a source, King and Modern provided the outline of a strategy that was a comprehensive and detailed approach to hiring the next President of Hockey Operations that Hilferty and other Comcast Spectacor execs found impressive.

Modern is known for helping to build diverse leadership teams, though multiple sources couldn’t say if diversity was a specific priority when it came to this hire.

One source indicated that Modern was being utilized for their business and operations expertise while Glasberg was consulting because of his wealth of experience with leaders in the sport of hockey.

There are several names that have been rumored to be candidates for the job so far, with Ray Shero, former Stanley Cup-winning GM of the Pittsburgh Penguins and son of Hall of Fame Flyers coach Fred Shero, near the top of the list. Other names mentioned include St. Louis Blues Senior Advisor Scott Mellanby, and Robert Esche, President of the AHL’s Utica Comets.

However, with this newly-formed search committee, it’s likely other names will surface and be considered as Hilferty and his team ramp up their efforts to fill the position quickly so the Hockey Operations Department can quickly shift into offseason mode and concentrate on the draft and free agency while continuing further restructuring under new leadership.

Danny Briere, who is the interim GM, is expected to lose the interim tag soon into the offseason and will work closely with the new President to shape the direction and success of the Flyers for the foreseeable future.
