Sean O’Malley is being compared to Conor McGregor after winning the UFC bantamweight title.
‘Suga’ upset the odds as he dropped and stopped the most successful 135lb titleholder of all-time, Aljamain Sterling, inside two rounds at UFC 292 on Saturday night.
The new champion made Sterling miss a shot before catching him with a lightning-fast counter that made ‘The Funk Master’ fall face-first to the Octagon floor.
O’Malley followed up with a flurry of ground strikes that forced veteran referee Marc Goodard to call off the UFC 292 main event after less than six minutes.
As the 28-year-old was trying to set up a title defence against the only man to beat him in MMA, Marlon Vera, fans of the sport were comparing him to its biggest star.
Former dual-weight UFC champion Daniel Cormier mentioned during the broadcast that he thought the punch O’Malley dropped Sterling with was similar to the one McGregor used to stop Jose Aldo in 2015.
‘Notorious’ famously made Aldo miss before catching him with a counter left to score a knockout win just 13 seconds into his first UFC title fight.
‘Notorious’ went on to become one of the world’s richest athletes and O’Malley is hoping to emulate him during a title run he predicts will continue for the next 12 years.
Although O’Malley landed a crisp right, it appears people agree with Cormier’s comparison as side-by-side videos of the two punches quickly began racking up thousands of views on social media.
‘Notorious’, who was tweeting along with UFC 292 on Saturday night, is yet to react to O’Malley’s knockout win as he took himself to bed before Ian Garry stepped into the cage a couple of hours earlier.
“See Brad [Katona] saying in cage about waking up Sunday morning with his coffee and watching his competition,” McGregor wrote.
“He is ahead of me with his commitment right there alone. I’m out, good night. Thanks Brad. On the ball. F*** this. Good night.
“Another two sessions tomorrow. Will watch rest then.”
Whatever the Irishman has to say, O’Malley will be happy with the stoppage that not only landed him a UFC title but also a $50,000 Performance of the Night bonus.
