When the NFL scrapped its one-helmet rule in the summer of 2021, it cleared the path for the Bucs to bring back their beloved creamsicle throwback uniforms. But supply chain issues delayed the return of the creamsicles for another year, meaning that while team would be able to wear its original color scheme again, it wouldn’t be until 2023.
Earlier this summer, the Bucs announced that their throwback game — featuring the creamsicle uniforms — would be on Oct. 15 when they host the Detroit Lions at Raymond James Stadium. And on Wednesday, Tampa Bay unveiled the updated version of its original uniforms that the team will wear for the mid-October clash between former NFC Central mates.
Right at 11:00 a.m., the Bucs dropped a promotional video featuring team legends Derrick Brooks, Ronde Barber and Mike Alstott, along with some imagery of the late great Lee Roy Selmon. Comedian Bert Kreischer and makeup entrepreneur Jaclyn Hill, both Bucs fans, also featured in the video before current Buccaneers Mike Evans, Lavonte David, Chris Godwin and Antoine Winfield Jr. made their entrance to model the new 2023 version of the creamsicles.

“Our fans have waited a decade to see our players back in these classic Creamsicle jerseys, and we are excited to celebrate our rich legacy when we debut these one-of-a-kind uniforms on Oct. 15th against the Detroit Lions,” Bucs COO Brian Ford said in a press release. “As we begin this new era of Buccaneers football, we aim to honor those who have played a vital role in our Club’s journey while also appealing to a new generation of fans who will drive our future success.”
Bucs’ 2023 Creamsicle Uniforms Feature The Latest Innovations From Nike
Longtime Bucs linebacker Lavonte David is the only member of the current roster who has ever had the chance to wear a version of the old Bucco Bruce creamsicle uniforms. During his rookie season back in 2012, the Bucs donned the orange and white in a game against the Saints.
But the Tampa Bay legend hinted back in June that the 2023 version of this uniform would be different than the 2012 look.
“I love it, I love it,” David said during mandatory mini-camp. “I got a little glimpse of them, they’re not like the ones I wore in 2012.”
When asked about the differences, David wouldn’t expand on his hint, opting to keep it a surprise.
“I can’t tell you all right now,” David said. “But you’re definitely in for a surprise. I like the way they look.”
It appears as if the differences have to do with the actual material of the uniforms themselves, as the Bucs noted in their press release that these creamsicle uniforms were the product of a collaborative effort with Nike. The uniform features Nike’s Vapor F.U.S.E. lightweight stretch-woven fabric and includes Nike’s Dri-FIT technology. Cosmetically, things largely look the same — which is typically a good thing when you’re dropping throwbacks to honor your roots.
Cornerback Jamel Dean is one of many Bucs players excited to wear the throwback look, something he talked about during mini camp as well.
“I’m so excited to wear those,” Dean said. “I’ve been waiting for years to wear them. I was like “Damn, I hope I’m on the team when they bring these jerseys back. It’s exciting because once I get it, I’m keeping it forever.”
And Dean made sure to note that there will be no jersey swap with anyone on the Lions following that Oct. 15 game.
“No jersey swap, I’m not jersey swapping,” Dean said. “It’s a rare piece of item right now because we went like what? A decade without them? So now when you see them bringing them back it’s ‘Oh man, we miss seeing these,’ and you never know when they’re going to bring them back.”
What do you think, Pewter People? Do you like this modern-day version of the Bucco Bruce-era uniforms, or do you prefer the originals?
