Bucs Make More Roster Moves

After previously signing two players from rookie mini-camp, the Bucs made a couple of more tweaks to their roster, including adding another two players. Tampa Bay announced that the team has signed safety Kedrick Whitehead along with the previous reports of wide receiver David Moore and linebacker Markees Watts. Greg Auman of Fox Sports is also reporting that the Bucs are signing defensive tackle C.J. Brewer.

In order to make room for all of the new signees, the Bucs waived second year offensive tackle Dylan Cook and undrafted free agent outside linebacker Nelson Mbanasor.

Tampa Bay overall is thin at safety on the 53-man roster but have made sure to add plenty at the position for their offseason practices. Chris Izien and Kaevon Merriweather were already undrafted free agent signings and Whitehead makes another. Whitehead played his college football at Delaware and was All-CAA for four seasons in a row, making first time over the last three.

In that time he recorded 295 tackles, 25 pass breakups, five interceptions, three forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries. He was also a team captain for three of his five seasons. If he ends up having the same type of success as the previous Whitehead that played safety for the Bucs (Jordan Whitehead), then Tampa Bay is in good hands.

Brewer was an undrafted free agent last year out of Coastal Carolina, signing with the Buffalo Bills and making their practice squad. He got called up for a game in September, recording two tackles, and then went back down to the practice squad after. Brewer was activated again in December but was released by the team a week later.

In his next move, Brewer was drafted by the Houston Roughnecks of the XFL for the 2023 season. He played in 10 games, recording 17 tackles and 2.5 sacks. The Roughnecks went 7-3 in the regular season to come in first place, but lost in the South Division championship during the postseason. The 6’2 290 pound defensive tackle ran an eye popping 4.97 40 coming out of college.

The Bucs are filling up on the defensive line with players on the roster and the practice squad, but with that said, they are some of the best at finding undrafted free agents that end up having a role for the team. Brewer will look to keep his NFL career going in Tampa this season.
