The Bucs announced they completed their interview with offensive coordinator candidate Klint Kubiak. The Broncos passing game coordinator last year, Kubiak didn’t run his offense in Denver. Rather he ran new head coach Nathaniel Hackett’s offense, which was largely ineffective in Denver and led to his firing after just 15 games.
Kubiak, 35, was the offensive coordinator in Minnesota during the 2021 season after spending the 2019-20 seasons as the Vikings quarterbacks coach. His father, Gary Kubiak was the former Texans head coach (2006-13) and Broncos head coach (2015-16), while also serving as the offensive coordinator in Baltimore (2014) and Minnesota (2020).
Klint Kubiak grew up in his father’s offense, which is from the Mike Shanhan system where Gary Kubiak served as the Broncos offensive coordinator from 1995-2005. The Shanahan/Kubiak offense features a lot of outside zone runs, play-action passes, bootlegs and misdirection. It’s similar to offenses run by Kyle Shanhan in San Francisco and Mike McDaniels, a Shanahan disciple, in Miami.
Bucs OC Candidate Kubiak Called Plays In Denver and Minnesota
Under Klint Kubiak in Minnesota the Vikings offense averaged 362.8 yards per game, which ranked 10th in the league and averaged 25 points per game, which ranked 13th in the NFL.
Kirk Cousins made the Pro Bowl in 2021, completing 66.3 percent of his passes for 4,221 yards with 33 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Pro Bowl rookie Justin Jefferson caught 108 passes for 1,616 yards (15 avg.) and 10 touchdowns, while Adam Thielen contributed 67 receptions for 726 yards (10.8) and 10 TDs as well.
The Vikings had the league’s 17th-ranked rushing attack, averaging 113.5 yards per game. Pro Bowler Dalvin Cook led the way with 1,159 yards and six touchdowns while averaging 4.7 yards per game.
Before he entered the NFL as the Vikings offensive quality control coach (2013-14), Kubiak was the offensive quality control coach (2010-11) and a grad assistant (2012) at Texas A&M where he worked with Bucs wide receiver Mike Evans. Kubiak then coached receivers at Kansas (2015) and then was back in the NFL as an offensive assistant with father in Denver (2016-18).
The Bucs are also expected to interview Jaguars passing game coordinator Jim Bob Cooter and Vikings receivers coach Keenan McCardell, who was a Pro Bowl wide receiver in Tampa Bay from 2002-03. McCardell caught two touchdowns in the Bucs’ victory in Super Bowl XXXVII.
