The WWE is finally having a stadium show in the UK again, the company announced today.
On Saturday, September 3, for the first time since SummerSlam 1992, the WWE will be running a stadium show in the UK with the Principality Stadium in Wales serving as the venue.
talkSPORT reported back in September 2021 that WWE were considering the Principality Stadium for a major show – either SummerSlam or a one-off event – and it’s believed the retractable roof was a major factor in the decision.
The stadium has a standard capacity of 74,500, but with floor seats being added, the attendance will likely be a few thousand more if WWE can sell out the show.
“Principality Stadium is the perfect place for a major event, hosting our amazing fans from Wales, throughout all of Europe, and around the world,” said John Porco, WWE Senior Vice President, Live Events.
“The weekend will be filled with a variety of WWE experiences that we believe will leave a lasting memory, on par with SummerSlam at Wembley Stadium in 1992.”
WWE are calling this one of their ‘premium live events’ which suggests that the show will be available to watch on the WWE, though that’s not confirmed as of yet.
Drew McIntyre has been campaigning hard for a WWE UK pay-per-view for a long time and has been a driving force in the media and behind the scenes to make it happen.
WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury also previously admitted that was on course to face McIntyre, who was WWE champion at the time, at a major WWE UK show but the Coronavirus cancelled those plans.
Fury said in 2021: “I was supposed to go to SummerSlam last year and I was supposed to go to WrestleMania last year and then I was also supposed to fight Drew McIntyre in a PPV event in the UK, but none of that happened thanks to COVID.”
McIntyre figures to be a major part of the show, but can WWE go back to their original plan of Fury? The Gypsy King is facing Dillian Whyte at Wembley Stadium on April 23.
The WWE is back in the Europe at the end of this month where they’ll hit Newcastle on April 28 and London on April 29 before heading to Paris, France on April 30 and finally Leipzig, Germany on May 1.
