What Happens if You Roll Snake Eyes in Craps?

Snake eyes will have a different outcome depending on your bet. Most commonly, it’s going to serve as a loss. Let’s look closely at what happens if you roll snake eyes in craps.

Snake Eyes Means You’ve Crapped Out

In craps, crapping out means that you’ve lost. For the majority of basic bets, rolling two ones or snake eyes will result in you losing your chips on the table. In an online casino, usually the random number generator is rolling the dice, but in person crapping out means that a new player becomes the shooter or dice roller.

Bets That Lose On Snake Eyes During the Come Out

Keep in mind that the come out is the first roll in a round of craps.

  • Come Bet
  • Pass Line Bet
  • Place, Buy and Lay

Come and pass line bets win on seven or eleven and lose on 2, 3 or 12. They’ll also be the most common bets you make at a craps table for the come out. Place, Buy and Lay bets are all specific number bets. They’ll still lose if a shooter craps out on the first roll.

Does Snake Eyes Always Cause a Shooter to Crap Out?

After the first roll or come out roll, rolling snake eyes in craps no longer causes you to crap out. Now, if the shooter rolls a seven before the point number, they crap out. This leaves more room to use bets like the field bet to cover snake eyes as a win condition.

Snake Eyes Win on These Craps Bets

Some bets payout on snake eyes in craps. These include

  • Don’t Pass Bet
  • Don’t Come Bet
  • Field Bet
  • Proposition Bets

A don’t pass or don’t come bet pays when snake eyes are rolled on the come out. Field bets can pay out multiple times on snake eyes after the come out, but before the point number is rolled again.

Snake Eyes Bet Payouts

Bet Payout
Don’t Come 1:1
Don’t Pass  1:1
Field Bet (2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11 or 12)  2:1 on 2 and 12

Don’t come and Don’t pass bets lose if the come out roll is a 7 or 11. They also lose if the point number is rolled again (the win conditions of a come or pass bet.)

Snake Eyes Prop Bet

Prop bets are single roll bets. A snake eyes or two ones prop bet is a bet that the next roll will be snake eyes. This is also known as an Aces bet. The payout is 30:1 against your wager. Since there is a 2.78% chance of the next roll being a two, it’s not a great bet from a probability perspective.

Where Does the Term Snake Eyes Come From?

Snake eyes means that both dice show the side with a single pip or indentation, resembling snake eyes. This is a newer gambling term originating in southern riverboat gambling circles in the 1910’s.
