Three Quarterbacks to Remember in 2022 (Fantasy Football)

Finishing up the Players to Remember series, let’s dive into three quarterbacks to remember in 2022. It’s difficult not to be enamored by the big names like Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes, and Lamar Jackson (to name a few), but you may be in a position where you don’t want to spend the draft capital to take a quarterback early. With so many changes this offseason, there are a handful of later round QBs who are in an elevated situation in 2022. Here are three of those players you can get in the 10th Round and later who will add value to your squad without the high price tag.

Derek Carr – QB Las Vegas Raiders

It feels like Derek Carr is usually on a sleeper quarterback list every season, yet he has not finished as QB1 once in his career. He has just missed the mark as the QB13 three times and once as the QB14, but he hasn’t lived up to the hype we expected in years past. 

If you are still in the camp of avoiding Carr, whether because he has burned you or because you just don’t believe, I completely understand. There are other options you can explore that I will touch on in this article. However, if you still have one foot on his side, this could finally be the year that Carr finishes within the top12.

Since 2018, Carr has finished each season with over 4,000 passing yards and above a 67% completion rate. He ranks fourth-highest in completions with 1518 behind Tom Brady, Matt Ryan, and Patrick Mahomes. Unfortunately, his touchdown and interception numbers aren’t as pretty. He finished 14th in touchdowns with 90 (Mahomes had 151) and his 41 interceptions since 2018 put him 10th highest. 

There has been a big piece of the offense missing for Carr, an elite wide receiver to compliment his elite tight end, Darren Waller. The Raiders addressed that issue in the offseason by adding Davante Adams from the Green Bay Packers. There is no doubt that Adams makes the team as a whole better, and that directly improves Carr’s fantasy production. Not only will he have Adams (his former college teammate) as a target, but having the wide receiver on the field will draw defenses away from other critical pieces like Waller and WR Hunter Renfrow. 

Carr’s numbers have been so close to QB1 production and Adams may just be that missing piece he has been needing to convert his air yards and completions into touchdowns. His ADP is toward the end of the 10th Round and is an excellent stack with either Adams, Waller, or Renfrow. 

Tua Tagovailoa – QB Miami Dolphins

Like Carr, Miami’s young quarterback has a much-improved situation heading into the 2022 season. While Tua Tagovailoa doesn’t have the experience like Carr (he has yet to play a full season since entering the league in 2020) he is surrounded by talent at every position. That started with a new head coach in Mike McDaniel, the former offensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers.

McDaniel assumed the head coaching position and decided to make some serious changes. In addition to shopping in bulk for running backs, he acquired an elite wide receiver of his own in Tyreek Hill. Chase Edmonds and Raheem Mostert offer pass-catching options in the backfield and Tagovailoa still has TE Mike Gesicki and his college teammate Jaylen Waddle.

All of the additions aren’t great for their individual fantasy outlook since there are so many mouths to feed in the offense. However, this gives Tagovailoa a huge boost for his “prove-it” season. 

He is currently being drafted at the end of the 11th Round with every opportunity to have a breakout year. 

Matt Ryan – QB Indianapolis Colts

Matt Ryan’s move to the Indianapolis Colts is one of my favorite moves of the offseason. Compared to all of the changes we saw over the summer, Ryan to the Colts seems almost vanilla. 

The former Falcons QB had his worst season last year, but that was largely due to the lack of talent around him. Aside from Cordarrelle Patterson and Kyle Pitts, Ryan had limited options, zero run game, and an offensive line made of Swiss cheese. He finished as the QB20 after disappointing managers two years in a row before that as the QB11 and QB12. 

We shouldn’t forget that he has finished as a QB1 eight times since 2011 and had five top10 finishes, including twice as the QB2. He has better weapons at his disposal this season, including Michael Pittman, Parris Campbell, Jonathon Taylor, and Nyheim Hines and has one of the best offensive lines to keep him upright. 

Ryan is a downright steal in the draft going late in the 13th Round, however, I do want to add a word of caution. This offense is likely to run through Taylor, which will limit Ryan’s upside. In single quarterback leagues, he is a speculative add. Last season, with Carson Wentz at the helm, the Colts ranked fifth in rush attempts, second in rushing yards, and fifth in rushing touchdowns. They finished in the bottom eight in passing yards and attempts but somehow converted that into the 12th highest in passing touchdowns. In Superflex or 2QB leagues, Ryan is a viable option out of the gate, but he is a risk in single QB leagues.
