The 150th Open Championship at St Andrews is on hand. Below, we look at the names to watch entering the final major of 2022 with our Open Championship picks based on the odds at our top-rated sportsbooks.
St Andrews Golf Links hosts The Open Championship for the 30th time. The historic 150th running of golf’s oldest and most storied major concludes the 2022 major season, with the beginning of the FedEx Cup Playoffs just under a month away.
Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, and Scottie Scheffler will head to Scotland as the consensus betting favorites for The Open.
Scheffler will be seeking his second major championship of the year after winning the Masters in April. Justin Thomas (PGA Championship) and Matt Fitzpatrick (U.S. Open) will also be looking for their second major wins of the season. Meanwhile, Collin Morikawa will defend his 2021 Open Championship win at Royal St. George’s, and Tiger Woods is chasing his fourth Open Championship and third at St Andrews.
Below, we look at the odds for the favorites and contenders, and the values and longshots for the 2022 Open Championship with our PGA Tour futures picks.
The Open Championship Info
When: Thursday, July 14 – Sunday, July 17
Where: St Andrews, Fife, Scotland
Defending champion: Collin Morikawa (Royal St. George’s)
How to watch: Golf Channel, NBC
St Andrews Course Profile
Par: 72
Length: 7,292
Greens: Fescue
The winning scores during the last four runnings of The Open at St Andrews have ranged from minus-14 to minus-19, with Tiger Woods firing both figures. Zach Johnson won at minus-15 in 2019 after a playoff over Marc Leishman and 2010 Open champion Louis Oosthuizen.
The Old Course is relatively short and very flat. Harsh Scottish winds and deep pot bunkers pose the biggest threats. The firm greens can also play extremely fast, helping to force drivers out of the hands of the Tour’s longer hitters who are hoping to hit the putting surfaces from the tee.
All but four holes feature a shared double green, and rain can make the fescue rough extra difficult.
The Open Championship 2022 Odds (as of July 7)
2022 Open Championship Picks: Favorites
McIlroy (+1000 via BetMGM)
Rory McIlroy made a Sunday charge to finish as the runner-up at the Masters. He then grabbed the 18-hole lead during the PGA Championship before slipping to an eighth-place finish. The Northern Irishman followed up a win at the RBC Canadian Open with a T-5 finish at the U.S. Open after another strong start.
McIlroy tied for third at St Andrews in 2010, but he didn't play in 2015.
Rahm (+1400 via FanDuel Sportsbook)
Though he slipped again to No. 3 in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) following the U.S. Open, Rahm has remained near the top of the oddsboard for every major and regular PGA Tour event he's played in 2022. His lone victory in 2022 was against a watered-down field at the Mexico Open, but Rahm still hasn't missed a cut this season. He's also logged five top-10 finishes to complement his victory.
Scheffler (+1600 via FanDuel)
Scheffler's odds have plummeted since being listed at around +4000 on Jan. 1, which was also the case with every other major in 2022. That improvement has come while racking up four wins over four months and losing in a playoff at the Charles Schwab Challenge.
His odds to win The Open have begun to creep upward despite his T-2 finish at the U.S. Open.
Thomas (+1800 via FanDuel)
Thomas' odds to win The Open changed very little after he brought home his second Wanamaker Trophy in May. He hasn't experienced much career success in The Open, with a top finish of T-11 in 2019.
Spieth (+2200 via BetMGM)
Jordan Spieth is best known for his success at the Masters and Augusta National Golf Club, but he's fared very well in links golf, too. The 2017 Champion Golfer of the Year finished second in 2021 at Royal St. George's, and he tied for fourth at St Andrews in 2015. However, Spieth missed the cut at the Masters in April, tied for just 34th during the PGA Championship in May, and for 37th at the U.S. Open.
His odds have still dropped considerably over the past few weeks while playing multiple practice rounds in Scotland.
Morikawa (+2000 via BetMGM)
The reigning Champion Golfer of the Year will play The Open for just the second time. It'll also be Morikawa's first professional appearance at St Andrews. He finished fifth and T-5 at the Masters and U.S. Open, respectively, two of his best results during 2022 to date.

2022 Open Championship Picks: Contenders
Fitzpatrick (+2000 via PointsBet)
Fitzpatrick has been playing excellent golf in 2022. He's risen from No. 24 to No. 10 in the OWGR with six top-10 finishes and his win during the U.S. Open. Expect his odds to fall even further as more money comes in on the top-ranked Englishman.
However, he didn't play St Andrews in 2015 and has never finished in the top 20 at The Open.
Schauffele (+2200 via DraftKings Sportsbook)
Xander Schauffele tied for second during the 2018 Open Championship, but he finished T-20 or worse in each of his other three appearances. DraftKings is offering the most appealing number, but all the other books have dropped Schauffele's odds after he snapped his full-field event winless drought with a victory at the Travelers Championship.
Zalatoris (+2500 via DraftKings)
The 25-year-old Will Zalatoris has quickly become one of the most-bet golfers in majors on a regular basis. He reached a career-best No. 12 in the OWGR with runner-up finishes at the PGA Championship and the U.S. Open. But Zalatoris withdrew from the 2021 Open during his debut.
Still, Zalatoris' ball-striking can play anywhere, especially at a course where all the top contenders are often dissuaded from using their driver.
Lowry (+2500 via PointsBet)
The 2019 Champion Golfer of the Year claimed that title at odds around +8000. Those odds are long gone not only due to Shane Lowry's past Open Championship win, but also his success in 2022.
The runner-up at The Honda Classic then tied for third back-to-back at the Masters and the RBC Heritage. He also tied for ninth at the Irish Open.
Smith (+2700 via FanDuel)
Cameron Smith's rise from No. 21 in the OWGR at the end of 2021 to a high of No. 3 in 2022 was among the biggest and most notable climbs. The Australian has logged two victories, including The Players Championship, and he tied for third at the Masters.
While he seems to be heading in the wrong direction following a missed cut at the U.S. Open, this number is still far too high for the sixth-ranked golfer in the world.
Johnson (+3300 via FanDuel)
Dustin Johnson's odds to win The Open have soared since he committed to the LIV Golf Invitational Series, and after a disappointing T-24 finish during the U.S. Open. He's fallen from No. 3 to No. 17 in the OWGR this year and is still heading in that direction.
Cantlay (+3300 via FanDuel)
Patrick Cantlay entered the 2022 PGA Championship as a strong course fit for Southern Hills in Tulsa, OK for the PGA Championship. But the reigning FedEx Cup champion missed the cut after a T-39 finish at the Masters, prolonging his struggles in majors. His odds for The Open were raised again following a T-14 finish at the U.S. Open.
Matsuyama (+3300 via FanDuel)
Hideki Matsuyama's worst major to date has been The Open Championship. He registered a T-6 finish during his debut in 2013, but Matsuyama hasn't registered a top-10 result in six other appearances, all while missing three cuts.
He tied for 18th at St Andrews in 2015 and didn't play last year at Royal St. George's.
Hatton (+3500 via Caesars Sportsbook)
Rather quietly, Tyrrell Hatton has racked up four top-10 finishes through 13 international events this year. The Englishman missed the cut at St Andrews in 2015, but he tied for fifth the next in 2016 and for sixth in 2019.
Koepka (+3500 via Caesars)
The odds for Brooks Koepka to win The Open have steadied after a high degree of early variance in the futures market. All four of Koepka's major titles have come on U.S. soil, but he's also tallied four top-10 finishes over his last five appearances at The Open. Those include a T-10 at St Andrews in 2015.
2022 Open Championship Picks: Values
Oosthuizen (+4000 via DraftKings)
Louis Oosthuizen tied for third last year at Royal St. George's. His odds to win in 2022 have increased since joining LIV Golf.
He's the winner of the 2010 Open Championship at St Andrews.
Hovland (+4100 via FanDuel)
Though he's accumulated five international wins since February 2020, Viktor Hovland hasn't yet enjoyed the success of his younger peers in majors. His T-12 finish during the 2021 Open Championship was Hovland's best professional result in a major.
The Norweigian's poor short-game play in 2022 may not lend itself well to St Andrews after a missed cut in the third major of the campaign. His odds have steadily risen since the beginning of the year.
Burns (+4100 via FanDuel)
Sam Burns advanced to No. 9 in the OWGR with his playoff win over Scheffler at the Charles Schwab Challenge. That was his fourth victory over the last two years, but he'll be playing The Open for just the second time following a T-76 finish in 2022.
Fleetwood (+4100 via FanDuel)
Once ranked as high as No. 9 in the OWGR, Fleetwood fell to 50th this year before a string of good results on the PGA Tour and a T-10 finish in the Porsche European Open. The Englishman has still registered just one top-10 finish in The Open across seven appearances.
Woods (+5000 via FanDuel)
Woods' past success at St Andrews and the magnitude of the 150th Open Championship contributed to him withdrawing from the PGA Championship and U.S. Open in preparation for the final major of 2022.
The flatter walk will be much better suited for his ailing legs as he goes for a 16th career major win. His odds have risen slightly during Woods' time away from competitive play.
DeChambeau (+5000 via DraftKings)
Bryson DeChambeau was available at odds of +10000 to win the PGA Championship before withdrawing due to lingering injuries. He was then as high as +4000 to win the U.S. Open.
His odds for The Open have climbed over the last two months amid his injuries, poor results, and leap to LIV Golf.
Finau (+5000 via BetMGM)
Tony Finau had slipped as low as No. 21 in the world rankings before a T-4 finish at the Charles Schwab Challenge. He finished T-35 and T-30 at the Masters and PGA Championship, respectively. But Finau missed the cut at the U.S. Open.
He's logged two top-10 finishes at The Open, but Finau didn't play St Andrews as a Tour rookie in 2015.
Niemann (+5000 via PointsBet)
Joaquin Niemann missed the cut in just two of eight stroke-play events since winning The Genesis Invitational in February. He finished outside of the top 20 in each of the first two majors of 2022, but the 23-year-old can compete in strong fields and at difficult courses.
2022 Open Championship Picks: Longshots
Reed (+8000 via BetMGM)
Patrick Reed's recent equipment switch and correlated improved game are sure to result in his weekly odds to win falling after being routinely priced around +10000 for much of 2022. His 10th-place finish during the 2019 Open was Reed's best result over seven appearances, but he was also T-20 at St Andrews in 2015.
Conners (+8000 via DraftKings)
Corey Conners finished in the top 10 during each of the last three runnings of the Masters, but that success hasn't continued at any of the other three majors. His T-15 showing during last year's Open Championship was Connors' best result in just two appearances.
Homa (+8000 via PointsBet)
After rising to fame on social media, Max Homa has climbed to No. 19 in the OWGR with three wins over the last two years, including the 2022 Wells Fargo Championship. He recently recorded his first success in a major with a T-13 finish at the PGA Championship.
Homa previously called The Open the best fit for his game among golf's four biggest events.
Casey (+10000 via FanDuel)
Paul Casey played just four PGA Tour events in 2022 after starting his season on the DP World Tour and battling injuries. He finished third against the elite field at The Players Championship. But Casey didn't play in the first three majors of 2022, and he's since defected to LIV Golf.
FanDuel is posting an outlier number on the Englishman, with +6600 being the highest odds available elsewhere.
Fox (+10000 via BetMGM)
New Zealander Ryan Fox missed out on his third European/DP World Tour victory with a playoff loss to Victor Perez earlier in 2022. Still, that was a strong show of form, and it instills some hope after Fox made the cut in four of his previous five appearances at The Open, including a T-49 in 2015.
His odds have dropped because Fox has reached a career-best No. 46 in the OWGR after three top-three finishes over his last three DP World Tour events.
Perez (+12500 via Caesars)
Victor Perez slipped back to No. 101 in the OWGR after missing the cut at the U.S. Open and a T-53 finish at the BMW International Open. His win at the Dutch Open and T-3 finish at the Porsche European Open came against weaker competition, but those courses were also more comparable to St Andrews.
He won the 2019 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, which was also played at St Andrews.
Mickelson (+21000 via FanDuel)
After skipping the Masters and PGA Championship following heavy criticism from the PGA Tour, Phil Mickelson ultimately joined LIV Golf. He horribly missed the cut at the U.S. Open, and there's little reason to expect anything different at St Andrews.
Cink (+25000 via BetMGM)
Stewart "Kitchen" Cink won the 2009 Open Championship and finished T-48 and T-20 at St Andrews in 2010 and 2015, respectively. He claimed the seventh and eighth victories of his PGA Tour career during the 2020-21 season, but Cink has fallen back to No. 95 in the OWGR since.
The 49-year-old hasn't logged a top-10 finish in a major since 2018, but this price is appealing for a past champion not that long removed from his top form.
