Sports Betting Operators Set to Launch in New York

The long-anticipated launch of legalized sports betting in New York is finally set for Saturday. We look at which operators will be going live and what’s in store.

The New York State Gaming Commission announced on Thursday that Caesars Sportsbook, DraftKings Sportsbook, FanDuel Sportsbook, and Rush Street Interactive (BetRivers) will be going live at 9 a.m. ET on Saturday, Jan. 8.

Another five approved online and mobile sportsbooks are still to come in New York. Bally Bet, BetMGM, PointsBet, Resorts World, and WynnBET will be approved as state requirements are met. While not among the first four books to be going live in New York, BetMGM has already made strides to being a major player in the state. It has partnered with Madison Square Garden Sports Corp., Madison Square Garden Entertainment Corp., and the professional teams that call the world’s most famous arena home.

When Will Sports Betting Go Live in New York?

The aforementioned first four books have been approved to begin accepting and processing mobile sports bets on Saturday at 9 a.m. ET. It will be up to each official operator as to when they actually begin accepting bets; however, don’t expect any of them to wait any longer than necessary.

Those in the Empire State will be able to bet on the entirety of the NFL playoffs, as well as Monday’s College Football Playoff National Championship between Georgia and Alabama.

What’s in Store?

Competition among sports betting operators to launch in New York has been fierce and will continue to be fierce. That competition has been despite a 51% tax rate on gross gambling revenue in the fourth-most populous state.

The online sports betting market in New York is expected to hit $1 billion in annual revenue, according to analysts at Macquarie.
