After a weekend filled with just about every sport imaginable, we have a solid 6-game slate in the NHL tonight. It finally feels like we’re in the full swing of things and beginning to figure out who teams are. By piecing together our favorite plays from the games going on, we’ve made a mega parlay for an incredible payout. We’ve targeted a variety of betting types for tonight’s slate.
Before we dive in, be sure to check out our NHL picks for today’s action.
Capitals vs Devils – Over 6.5 (-110)
Let’s get things started with a total rather than predicting a side. That’s been the theme for Washington Capitals games dating back to last season. Even their most recent game was a perfect example of this. After falling behind 2-0 against the Los Angeles Kings, the Caps roared back with 4 goals in the 3rd period to ultimately win the game 4-3. Rather than sweating out the emotional rollercoaster that is Washington, let’s focus on the total. That game helped us cash a best bet, so let’s use tonight’s total to cash a mega parlay.
The biggest concerns for both the Caps and New Jersey Devils was goaltending last season. Washington allowed both their goalies to walk over the offseason and are now giving former Colorado Avalanche goaltender Darcy Kuemper a shot. He hasn’t been overly impressive, as the Caps have had each of their last 3 games go over the total, including a 10-goal game against the Vancouver Canucks. Similarly, the Devils allowed the 4th-most goals per game last season and are still trusting goalie Mackenzie Blackwood this year. With New Jersey not making an improvement in net, expect both teams to help get this game over the total.
Edmonton Oilers -1.5 (+196) over Pittsburgh Penguins
Now we’re going to transition into our most valuable play for our mega parlay. This matchup features 2 of the premier teams in their respective conferences, so it may seem surprising that we expect a clear victory for one of them. However, the Oilers are at home and will be out with a vengeance. They just suffered a shutout loss to the St. Louis Blues, which is quite literally almost unbelievable. Connor McDavid alone not recording a point is unheard of. It was the first time so far this season, and it only happened a handful of times all of last year.
He’s still on pace to win yet another Art Ross Trophy, and Pittsburgh should be fearful of the bounce-back spot. The Penguins have had just 1 road game so far this season, which was also up in Canada. They were upset by the Montreal Canadiens, who are among the worst teams in the entire NHL. If that wasn’t enough, the Oilers smashed the Pens when they met last season. Edmonton took their 2 meetings against Pittsburgh by finals of 5-1 and 5-2, and we only need them to win by 2 goals for this play.
Toronto Maple Leafs ML (-110) over Vegas Golden Knights
We’re going to round things out with yet another type of play. Rather than expecting a multi-goal win, we just need the Leafs to win in any fashion against the Knights. That also includes an overtime or shootout win. Toronto handled Vegas in their first meeting last season, winning that game by a final of 4-0. However, the 2nd game was a close 4-3 win, so we’re playing it just a bit safer given how evenly matched these teams are. The Leafs are coming into this game having just won their most recent game 4-1, which was also on the road.
While the Knights have an identical 4-2-0 record, they’ve had a slightly easier go of things to begin the season. Two of their 4 wins have come against the Chicago Blackhawks and Seattle Kraken, who were 2 of the worst teams in the NHL last year. It’s also surprising that Toronto’s Auston Matthews has just 1 goal so far this season. He became the first American-born player with 60 goals last year, 3 of which came in his 2 games against the Knights. With Vegas still without starting goaltender Robin Lehner, Matthews and company can steal this win on the road.
