Michael Conlan ‘conscious and stable’ after being knocked out of ring by Leigh Wood in final round of astonishingly dramatic fight

Leigh Wood knocked Michael Conlan out of the ring to snatch an astonishing come-from-behind KO win in the final round of their crazy fight on Saturday night in Nottingham.

There was concern for Conlan who was stretchered from the arena and given oxygen, but then thankfully later confirmed by Matchroom’s Frank Smith to be “conscious and stable” as he arrived at hospital.

The fight began at a fast pace as Wood took the centre of the ring and pursued Conlan early on.

Then, in a flash, Conlan floored Wood with a massive left hand on the bell.

He made it back to his feet and back to his corner, but was also nearly taken out in round two.

Wood battled valiantly to get a foothold in the bout and turned the contest into a thrilling brawl at times in the middle rounds.

It seemed as though he had little left in the tank approaching the final few minutes though, as Conlan teed off on him in round 11.

In a remarkable turnaround though, Wood landed a left hook which floored Conlan at the end of that very session.

Then, entering the final round, it was Conlan who was on the back foot.

Wood, knowing he was likely behind on the scorecards, pressed for a finish and secured just that.

In the closing minutes, Wood knocked Conlan through the ropes and the fight was waved off instantly.

Celebrations were quickly muted as Conlan fell hard out of the ring and had to be tended to by medics.

He then had to be stretchered from the arena and was given oxygen.

Wood reacted: “First of all I wanna say I hope Michael is alright.

“I can’t really celebrate until I know he’s alright, my thoughts are with him.”

Thankfully, not long later, Matchroom CEO Frank Smith tweeted: “Michael Conlan arrived at hospital, conscious and stable.”
