The 2022 FIFA World Cup tournament kicks off on Sunday, November 20. The tournament is nearly here and the excitement continues to grow amongst soccer fans.
We previously previewed the 2022 FIFA World Cup, giving you the latest odds on the tournament. We also showcased the Zcode System playoff simulator to help you make smart bets on games at the tournament.
Now, we turn our attention to the FIFA World Cup 2022 tournament’s top goalscorer betting odds. The top scorer market is a great way to diversify your betting for this winter’s global sports event.
The last 12 World Cup top scorers all finished with single-digit goal numbers. In the last two editions of the tournament (2014 and 2018), James Rodriguez and Harry Kane tallied six goals to win the award.
Let’s look at the top five players in terms of betting odds, a dark horse to win the top scorer award, and my pick for the player to win the trophy.
Harry Kane – England +700
England’s Harry Kane won the top scorer award in 2018 at the last edition of the World Cup. Now, the Tottenham Hotspur player goes to Qatar aiming to win the trophy again. Kane is in good form with 12 Premier League goals in 15 games this season.
Kylian Mbappe – France +900
Kylian Mbappe has 19 goals in 20 games for Paris Saint-Germain in all competitions this season. Mbappe is likely to play a slightly different position for the French team at the World Cup, however. He will still have plenty of goalscoring chances. Mbappe won the World Cup Young Player of the Tournament in 2018.
Neymar – Brazil +1200
Brazil are the bookmaker’s favorite to win the World Cup 2022 in Qatar. Neymar is the team’s star player and will be expected to create goals and score them. However, Neymar isn’t the most prolific goalscorer for the Brazilian team. He does have 75 goals in 121 international matches, and the forward goes into the World Cup in fine form. Neymar scored 15 goals in 20 games for Paris Saint-Germain before the World Cup break.
Karim Benzema – France +1200
Karime Benzema won the Balon d’Or earlier this autumn, signifying him as the best player in the world over the last 12 months. Now, Benzema heads to the World Cup with France, as they seek a second straight World Cup trophy. Benzema played just 12 times prior to the World Cup break due to injuries. He scored six La Liga goals for Real Madrid but missed the team’s last four games due to a muscle problem. You may want to avoid a bet on Benzema due to his recent injury problems.
Lionel Messi – Argentina +1200
Argentina have become one of the betting favorites to win the World Cup over the last two months. Bookmakers are suddenly believing Argentina could win the trophy and Messi could win a first-ever World Cup. He came close in 2014, as Argentina lost 1-0 to Germany in the final Messi was the player of that tournament. Now, he could lead all players in scoring. Messi has six career World Cup goals in three previous tournaments. He is having an outstanding season for the club team Paris Saint-Germain. Messi has 12 goals and 14 assists in all competitions.
Dark horse to win top scorer award
Memphis Depay – Netherlands +2500
Netherlands forward Memphis Depay has two career goals in four previous World Cup matches. Depay will be the Netherlands’ main goalscoring threat, as long as he remains fit during the World Cup. The Netherlands should win Group A, which features Qatar, Ecuador, and Senegal. He could get on a roll in the group, leading to him topping the goalscoring charts at the end of the tournament. Depay has 42 goals in 81 career international matches for the Netherlands.
FIFA World Cup 2022 Top Goalscorer Pick
Lautaro Martinez – Argentina +2500
Argentina’s Lautaro Martinez is a brilliant option as a dark horse to win the World Cup’s top scorer award. Martinez has 21 goals in 40 career international games for Argentina. Messi will create plenty of chances for Martinez to score, and the Argentines are in a group they should easily win.
