Fantasy Reaction: Sony Michel Signs with Miami (Fantasy Football)

Former Rams and Patriots RB, Sony Michel, has signed a one-year deal with the Miami Dolphins. Last year, Michel was traded to the Rams midway through the season due to injury concerns shaking up the Rams’ depth chart. While in LA, Sony flashed fantasy upside, banking four top-15 RB weeks in six starts for the Rams. However, at age 27, and now on his third NFL roster in just two seasons, Michel is very likely to be used as part of a committee backfield in Miami.

New Miami Dolphins HC, Mike McDaniel, comes over from San Francisco, which was a team known for using a true committee approach at the RB position. It seems McDaniel and his staff are set on building a stable of backs rather than handing the keys over to one guy as a bell cow RB. In free agency, the team signed former Cardinals RB Chase Edmonds then signed former 49er Raheem Mostert to a one-year deal as well. Of course, Myles “The Gas Man” Gaskin remains on this depth chart to further complicate things. If we follow the team’s transactions, Edmonds seems most likely to get the first crack at lead back duties based on the fact that he’ll be making the most money in this RB group, but Mostert and Michel will certainly be used as well. It’s possible Myles Gaskin is cut, as he carries just a $21,695 dead cap hit this year. McDaniel has talked about using speedsters Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle all over the field, including out of the backfield, making this Dolphins depth chart is sure to be a tough puzzle to solve this off-season.

The Michel signing should keep the ADP for Edmonds and Mostert down, making them all fine mid to late round fliers, but without an injury here, it’s unlikely we see usable fantasy weeks from these guys on a consistent basis. That said, over the last three seasons, the 49ers ranked 3rd in neutral situation rush rate, and if McDaniel brings over a similar offensive philosophy, there could be intermittent value in this backfield throughout the season for weekly spot starts. For now, this is a situation to monitor throughout the summer.
