When Dave Scott promised Chuck Fletcher a blank check at the mid-season press conference last week, many criticized the comment because it doesn’t make sense in a salary cap world.
Except, it does when it comes to loading up the team in the front office.
According to a Flyers source, the organization will announce the hiring of Danny Briere as assistant general manager.
Briere, 44, who was a finalist for the Montreal Canadiens general manager position recently, will sign a two-year deal.
An announcement is expected in the next 1-2 weeks.
Briere has had an increased role with the organization this season, whether it be working
All the while, Briere has served as President and Governor of the Maine Mariners of the East Coast Hockey League.
Briere is the latest in a flurry of promotions to the Flyers front office staff.
On Thursday the organization announced that Alyn McCauley had been promoted to the position of Director of Player Personnel and Tom Minton to the position of Director of Hockey Operations.
Briere joins Brent Flahr and Barry Hanrahan as assistant GMs to Chuck Fletcher.
Suddenly the Flyers front office is deep with talent. Now, it’s tasked with turning around a once-proud franchise from one of its most disappointing seasons ever.
Briere played 973 NHL games over 17 seasons with the Phoenix Coyotes, Buffalo Sabres, Philadelphia Flyers, Montreal Canadiens, and Colorado Avalanche.
He spent six seasons in Philadelphia, where he quickly became one of the all-time beloved players in the franchise’s rich history.
He finished just shy of 700 career points and was a two-time All-Star.
Brière was known as a clutch playoff performer throughout his career as well.
As a 2010 Stanley Cup Finalist with the Flyers, he led the league in postseason scoring, putting up 30 points in 23 games.
He averaged just under a point-per-game in his NHL playoff career (124 games).
The Gatineau, Quebec native now resides in Philadelphia with his wife, Misha.
Brière also has three sons: Carson, Caelan, and Cameron, all of whom play hockey.
EDIT –
The official title might be “special assistant to the GM,” but @AntSanPhilly is on to it. https://t.co/i5zG5CuoL6

Kinkead: Our understanding is that it’s semantics here with the official title. Regardless, please drop your best Dwight Schrute “assistant to the regional manager” jokes on Twitter and Facebook.
