The Bucs’ backfield will look a little different on Sunday when they take the field at FirstEnergy Stadium in Cleveland to face the 3-7 Browns.
Running back Leonard Fournette (hip) has been ruled out for the game, while running back Giovani Bernard (ankle) has been activated from injured reserve.

Fournette was initially listed on the final injury report of the week as doubtful, but now the Bucs have downgraded him as he continues to deal with the hip pointer injury that he suffered against the Seahawks back in Week 10. Meanwhile, Bernard will make his return to the lineup for the first time since Week 2. He picked up an ankle injury in Tampa Bay’s win over New Orleans before hitting injured reserve.
Bernard was designated to return from injured reserve earlier this week, and now it appears he’s ready to go. His return comes at the perfect time, obviously, with Fournette set to miss Sunday’s game against the Browns. To make room for the veteran running back on the 53-man roster, Tampa Bay waived linebacker J.J. Russell. And to account for that move, the team has elevated practice squad linebacker Ulysses Gilbert for Sunday’s contest.

Bernard and Ke’Shawn Vaughn will serve as depth behind rookie running back Rachaad White, who broke out in a big way against the Seahawks two weeks ago. The 2022 second-round pick out of Arizona State recorded his first career 100-yard rushing game and earned Good Morning Football’s “Angry Runs” Scepter for his impressive 29-yard run and stiff arm of Seahawks safety Quandre Diggs.
The Bucs have tried to establish the run more in 2022 than they did in the last two seasons, though they haven’t had a lot of success. Outside of their Week 1 win in Dallas and their Week 10 victory in Germany over the Seahawks, Tampa Bay has struggled to get the ground game going. But against a Browns defense that is allowing 135.1 rushing yards per game this season, perhaps the Bucs will have a chance to run White early and often with more success. And if that’s the case, it’ll help to have Bernard back in the mix to rotate in when needed.
