Bucs Restructure New Offensive Lineman’s Contract

With the regular season looming, the Bucs made a move to free up some salary cap space. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the team has restructured the contract of right guard Shaq Mason.

Mason, who the Bucs traded a fifth-round draft pick for back in March, had two years left on his contract. Schefter reports this will free up a bit over $6 million in cap space, although I’m not sure they can free up quite that much.

What the Bucs most likely did was convert as much of his 2022 salary as possible into a guaranteed signing bonus. This would have included his $6.5 million base salary, as well as his $1 million in per-game roster bonuses. The maximum they could have converted of that is $6,380,000. This is most likely the number Schefter is referring to. However, that $6,380,000 gets prorated across the life of the contract.

Assuming the Bucs tacked three void years on top of the two years remaining on Mason’s deal, the proration would come out to $1,276,000 per year. One of those installments goes back on to his 2022 cap number. So, most likely, Mason’s new cap number for this year reduces from $7,382,353 to $2,396,000. This results in a savings of $4,986,353. It also raises his 2023 cap number from $8.5 million to $9,776,000 and puts the Bucs on the hook for a dead cap hit of $3,828,000.

Restructure Allows Bucs Room To Operate

As if every sign in the world before hadn’t already pointed toward the team being “all in” for this year, add this move to the list.

Now, before you get excited that this almost $5 million in savings is some foreshadowing for a big move to come, it most likely isn’t. Tampa Bay only had about $1.4 million in cap space prior to this restructuring, according to overthecap.com. That isn’t enough for the team to operate throughout the season with injuries, call-ups, mid-season signings, etc. Tampa Bay needed the room to breathe.

So no, Bucs fans, Shaq Mason did not restructure his contract to draw Rob Gronkowski or J.C. Tretter out of retirement. But he did give the Bucs the space they need to move throughout the season.
