Bucs HC Bowles Reveals Scheduled Days Off For Key Vets

A lot of attention was generated by national media and NFL fans over the weekend with reports that Tom Brady would have Wednesdays off from Bucs practice this year. This shouldn’t be a surprise, though, as the 45-year old quarterback received multiple practices off at the end of last season to keep him fresh.

The Bucs are sticking to the same game plan this season for Brady. But as it turns out, Brady isn’t the only Bucs veteran who will have days off each week. Head coach Todd Bowles reiterated that Brady is getting rest days and not personal days.

It’s no different than what other members on the roster will get on practice days that run every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

“It’s not a personal day, it’s a rest day,” Bowles said. “It’s also Julio’s [Julio Jones] rest day. And then we have Chris [Godwin] on Thursday, Mike [Evans] and Lavonte [David] on Friday, so it’s not just him. We have guys we have designated days off for after games to help them recover quicker and do things. He has Wednesday, but so does Julio. He’s here, he’s in meetings, the rest day for everybody is just at practice.”

Bucs Veterans Have Lengthy Injury Histories

Bowles and the Bucs have good reasons to rest each of the players who were named.

Jones has a lengthy injury history and missed Week 2’s game against the Saints with a knee issue. Godwin, of course, is coming back from a torn ACL and also missed Sunday’s contest because of a hamstring injury. Evans came up on the injury report all week with a calf injury, and David, the longest-tenured Buc, dealt with serious foot problems last season that caused him to go on injured reserve.

Typically, it’s common practice for players to be given days off. When it’s Brady, who was also given 11 days off during training camp for personal reasons, it causes more of a stir.

As for Jones’ availability for Tampa Bay’s Week 3 home game against the Packers, Bowles left it undetermined.

“We’ll see how he recovers,” Bowles said. “Again, we got a long week ahead of us. I can’t make that decision without seeing him.”
