Let’s get pumped for a nicely stacked card in this weekend’s UFC event, UFC Vegas 36: Brunson vs. Till. This week, I’ll write about my most favorite pick on this card in Tom Aspinall vs. Sergey Spivak.

Tom Aspinall

Tom Aspinall is a British mixed martial artist currently ranked #13 in the UFC Heavyweight division. Aspinall has always participated in some sort of combat sport his whole life starting as a young kid. He started training in wrestling, then transitioned to Brazilian jiu-jitsu. After training in MMA and amassing a professional record of 5-2, he went on to become a professional boxer.

Aspinall signed with Cage Warriors and eventually was offered a contract with the UFC. He made his professional UFC debut on July 25, 2020 against Raphael Pessoa and won via TKO in the first round. Aspinall has earned the UFC Performance of the Night bonus (two times) vs. Jake Collier and Andrei Arlovski.

Sergey Spivak

Sergey “Polar Bear” Spivak is a Moldovan mixed martial artist currently ranked #14 in the UFC Heavyweight division. Spivak has fought under numerous promotions in his professional career: World Warriors Fighting Championships, Eagles Fighting Championship, N1 Pro Nomad MMA, and Real Fight Promotion. 

Spivak was 19 years old when he made his Real Fight Promotion debut in 2014 - he won via T/KO in the first round. Polar Bear ran an undefeated record until he made his UFC debut in 2019 against Walkt Harris; he lost via T/KO in the first round. Of all his professional accomplishments, Spivak has earned: WWFC Heavyweight Championship.

Prediction

I’ve enjoyed watching both of these fighters in the octagon for the past year or so. So the idea of having them in the same octagon going head-to-head is quite thrilling for me. We all love a BBB (Big Boy Brawl). The current UFC Odds are: Tom Aspinall -240 and Sergey Spivak +205 via BetOnline (Visit our BetOnline Review).

Both guys have the ability to finish a fight within the first round, and they are both skilled on the ground. 

It’s all a matter of who is more technical and powerful. It’s hard to beat Aspinalls footwork and movement around the cage. He is always so light on his feet and quick with his hands. 

We can’t completely rule out Spivak because he has definitely proven his strength and skills with 5 T/KO wins, however he has proved himself to be a bit chinny with 1 T/KO loss from 2019 against Walt Harris, while Aspinall has proved his chin this far.

Spivak tends to leave openings for his opponents when he throws his wild overhand punches to gain a finish. This is not good against a quick, powerful, and accurate striker like Aspinall. All he needs to do is connect once and it is lights out. 

I mentioned in my Top UFC Picks video, if Sergey finds himself struggling on the feet or even Aspinall clips and dazes him, Sergey may aim to bring this fight to the ground and let his weight tire Aspinall. However, Aspinall is so skilled overall, I can envision him winning on the ground too. I predict this fight will end  inside the distance with Aspinall getting his hand raised.
