‘Top drawer’ Mauricio Pochettino made me a better player says Tom Carroll, as former Tottenham boss returns to management with Paris Saint-Germain

Mauricio Pochettino is back in the dugout with Paris Saint-Germain after more than a year away from football management.

Pochettino was sacked by Tottenham in November 2019 after five-and-a-half years in charge of the north London outfit.

The Argentine, who succeeds Thomas Tuchel at the Ligue 1 giants, remains one of the most highly regarded managers in world football despite his abrupt exit from Spurs.

The 48-year-old took great pride in helping nurture young players during his stints at both Southampton and Tottenham.

And one of many beneficiaries along the way has been former Spurs midfielder Tom Carroll.

Big things were expected from the midfielder when he made the successful transition from Spurs’ academy into the first-team.

And while he was eventually forced to move on to pastures new in a bid for regular football, the impact Pochettino had on Carroll’s career was long-lasting.

The 2015/16 campaign was Carroll’s breakthrough season at Tottenham, scoring three goals in 30 appearances.

A new contract followed in September 2016, but just four months later he was on his way to south Wales to seal a permanent switch to Swansea.

Following his departure Pochettino labelled Carroll a ‘very good professional and a very good player’, sentiments which the now QPR player also shares about his former boss.

“Pochettino was top drawer. I think he helped me as a player to get better,” Carroll told talkSPORT when quizzed on who has been the best manager he’s worked under in his career so far.

“I think he improved me a lot. Not just in terms of the dirty side of the game; but the high intensity, the pressing and so forth.

“I had that really good season with Pochettino where I played thirty odd games, so I’m really grateful to him for that opportunity.

“I enjoyed my spell playing under him, he was really good.”
