It is Week 6 of the NFL season! Remember to check out Andy, Mike, and Jason on The Fantasy Footballers podcast every Monday through Friday during the season!
Here’s a recap of this week’s episodes!
Monday – Monday Punday, Fantasy Studs & Duds
What a ridiculously wild week, with tons of excitement and, unfortunately, some more brutal injuries. Today best friends Mike and Jason take the wheel, beginning with Monday Punday.
News & Notes
George Kittle is on IR, missing at least two more weeks, with a calf issue. We also got our much-anticipated Russell Wilson update – he is targeting a Week 10 return after this finger tendon tear. The guys say you can drop him right now if you need the bench space. The Giants game was a blood bath. Saquon, Daniel Jones, and Kenny Golladay all went down, before Kaderious Toney punched a guy, and ejection followed. In other games, the late-night Kansas City game took a few victims as well – Kelce, Hill, and CEH. JuJu Smith-Schuster will go on the IR, and it is a season-ending injury for him. Maxx Williams from the Arizona Cardinals also looks like he might have a season-ending injury.
Week 5 Studmuffins
After the horrific Week 5 Injury Update, it is time for the Fantasy Studs. Two words – Justin Herbert. The combination of Herbert’s talent and the much-improved Chargers’ play calling by Brandon Staley has created a powerhouse AFC team. Josh Allen, Tom Brady, and Davis Mills (!) also had amazing days. Jameis Winston had another excellent game for a team that has no clue what their identity is. Literally, no one knows. They are on bye in Week 6 and could get Michael Thomas back in Week 7. Jalen Hurts, despite terrible real-life QB play, his rushing baseline continues to give you a solid QB1 for fantasy.
RBs are highlighted with Derrick Henry. Shocking. Austin Ekeler had a monster of a game, including the best-force-fed TD ever seen. The “Gas Man,” Myles Gaskin, looked great for Miami, but both Mike and Jason are yet to be back in on him yet. Alvin Kamara, Zeke, and both RBs for the Browns also had excellent showings. Some WRs who had great weeks – Mike Williams, Davante Adams, and Ja’Marr Chase. Chase Claypool also had a great game, and with JuJu now being out for the season, he will be a great fantasy option. TE wise, Kyle Pitts had his first NFL touchdown, and Dawson Knox is an every-week starter.
Week 5 Duds
We had a plethora of players who “Pooped in Their Big Boy Pants.” Kyler Murray headlines this segment. Sam Darnold and David Carr were also disappointing. The RBs that did not deliver – Chase Edmonds, Melvin Gordon, and Miles Sanders. D.J. Moore, Stefon Diggs, and A.J. Brown were some WRs that had terrible games.
Tuesday – Monday Night Recap, Where There’s Smoke, There’s Fire, Waivers & Streamers
Wow. What a Monday Night Game! We went into halftime witnessing quite a snooze fest. But how things changed. Lamar Jackson and Mark Andrews had games of a lifetime, and Hollywood Brown was on fire. Miracles galore! Michael Pittman showed that he is clearly the WR1 now on the Colts side, and Jason is not nervous about this changing when TY Hilton returns.
Where There’s Smoke, There’s Fire
Leonard Fournette is the first subject here. The first three weeks of the season were far from extraordinary, but he has finished as a top 15 RB in the past two weeks. Jason cautiously calls this fire, and he is here to stay but reminds us that he is still not that good. Fournette’s better performances are contingent on matchups. Next comes Emmanuel Sanders, who is getting Jason all hot and bothered. Until something big happens, play him every week. Moving forward, Myles Gaskin has a couple of good matchups, but the guys do not think he is reliable. A lot depends on the return of several players on the Dolphins. The consensus here is smoke.
News & Notes
Jon Gruden has resigned from his position as the Las Vegas Raiders head coach. We all know by now the grossness in these emails, and now the Raiders are moving on. Clyde Edwards-Helaire will miss at least few weeks with an MCL sprain, and Trey Lance also has a knee sprain going into his bye week.
Waivers
Bye weeks are here, so pay extra attention this week. The top pick-up is Giants WR Kadarius Toney. He had an absurd number of targets last week and should be played this week. Broncos’ Tim Patrick and Raiders’ Hunter Renfrow have been mentioned on the show previously as players to target. Amon-Ra St. Brown is a new possible pick-up, and Mike preaches about Rondale Moore’s opportunities. RB wise, there should be lots of opportunities for Devontae Booker with Saquon Barkley out. Darrel Williams will be the main man for the Chiefs with CEH’s absence, and he has some great matchups on the horizon.
Streamers
QB wise the guys like Joe Burrow, Trevor Lawrence, and oddly enough, Taylor Heinicke this week. Mike would target the Colts, the Dolphins, or the Panthers when it comes to D/ST.
Wednesday – Buy or Sell, Fantasy Draft Redo
Buy/Sell
Touching on last week’s bets, Damien Harris was not a top 20 RB, and Terry McLaurin did not finish in the top 15 WRs. For Week 6, we start with A.J. Brown – is he a top 24 WR against Buffalo. Andy says no, while Jason and Mike buy this. Chase Edmonds as a top 25 RB is the next topic. Injury concerns abound, and the guys sell this. The final Buy/Sell is Adam Thielen as a top 24 outcome against Carolina, and all the guys sell this one.
News
David Montgomery and Clyde Edwards-Helaire were placed on injured reserve, and Jason’s fantasy team weeps.
Fantasy Draft Redo
Andy, Mike, and Jason have taken time to reflect on five weeks of data and are diving into a Fantasy Draft Redo. Mike has the first pick, and he still chooses Christian McCaffrey since he should be returning soon. Andy is up to second and selects Derrick Henry. Injury risk definitely plays into these choices. Jason rounds out the top three with Dalvin Cook. After these top three guys, it gets interesting. Travis Kelce goes at the four spot in that he consistently has week-winning capability in a position where it is hard to find that. A few more RBs are drafted, and pick nine is our first WR, with Jason selecting Davante Adams. As the guys continue down the draft board, Andy mentions the confidence check – at this point, how certain are you that the players will replicate their performances in the first five weeks of the season?
Thursday – Never Not Working, Fantasy Forecast, Starts of the Week, Boom Boom Kicker
It’s Football Time!
Never Not Working
The Bye-pocaypse is coming. With the first week of byes upon us now and six teams kicking their feet up next week, this is the time to plan ahead a full week. Jason tells us to look at our rosters and look ahead and grab what you need now, while offering up a few suggestions at each position. Check out who gets dropped because of bye weeks, and if you have room to stash anyone, make sure to do it!
News
Kyler Murray was limited in practice, but Andy says not to overreact. Julio Jones returned to practice looking reasonably good, and Tua is expected to start in London, barring setbacks.
Fantasy Forecast
We head to London again to witness a Floridian showdown between the Dolphins and the Jaguars. Although the game might not be massively exciting, there is a myriad of fantasy implications. Andy likes Trevor Lawrence, and James Robinson as must starts, and Marvin Jones and Laviska Shenault might be “close your eyes and start.” Green Bay travels to Chicago to play the Bears, and it seems like a straightforward matchup. The Bengals play the Lions in the next game discussed. Andy is cautious and feels that there might be potential for fantasy disappointment. Start D’Andre Swift and Joe Mixon for sure, but you may have caution starting T.J. Hockenson. The Texans take on the Colts with a very low over/under. Start Taylor and Pittman, and T.Y. Hilton could return this week. The Rams take on a battered Giants team, and there is not much to love on the Giants side. If Daniel Jones starts, Jason says, he has more confidence in the other position players. Start your Rams players. An angry Chiefs team travels to Washington for the highest over/under game of the week. Besides the locked-in starters, Andy also likes Darrel Williams on the Chiefs side. Washington could put up a lot of points, so there are a number of fantasy starters for both teams. Finally, the Vikings play the Panthers, who will be without Christian McCaffrey. Jason also suggests that this might end up a low-scoring game with fantasy disappointment.
Starts of the Week
Andy’s starts this week include Trevor Lawrence and Zach Ertz. Jason is going with Taylor Heinicke, Joe Mixon, and Ricky Seals-Jones. Finally, Mike is starting the likes of Joe Burrow and Chase Claypool.
In classic Thursday tradition, we end with Jason’s Boom Boom Kicker of the Week.
Friday – Thursday Night Recap, FootClan Friday, Fantasy Forecast, Fantasy Faceoff & Wheel of Shame
Thursday Night Recap: Buccaneers at Eagles
Andy, Mike, and Jason start the show with the breaking news of Zach Ertz being traded to the Arizona Cardinals, which positively affects several fantasy options, and then transition right into the Thursday Night Recap. Jalen Hurts currently an excellent fantasy QB, but Andy clarifies that Hurts is not to be a long-term NFL quarterback. Even with a horrible game, Hurts still scored more fantasy points than Tom Brady. Until the Eagles have a more stable QB, you will have trouble starting the right Philly pass catcher on the right week. On the other side of the ball, it is clear that Leonard Fournette is the main RB now.
News
Damien Williams has been placed on the covid/reserve list, and Khalil Herbert is the next man up. Daniel Jones looks like he will be ready to play. Dalvin Cook will be playing this week. The surprise big news is that Nick Chubb has been ruled out for Week 6 with a calf injury. For more injury updates, follow Matthew Betz on Twitter and tune in to his Injury Blitz Podcast.
Fantasy Forecast Part Two
The Chargers take on the Ravens for the first breakdown. Fire up all those Chargers against this Baltimore defense. Start your main Ravens (Lamar Jackson, Hollywood Brown, Mark Andrews), but be cautious with those RBs. The undefeated Arizona Cardinals play the Cleveland Browns. This week, Andy is big on Chase Edmonds but is benching everyone on the Browns side besides Kareem Hunt. Distractions abound around the Raiders as they take on the Broncos. Jason thinks this game might get ugly. Dallas plays New England and after the Patriots’ dismal defensive performance last week, fire up all those Cowboys. Mike suggests picking up and stashing Rhamondre Stevenson, and Andy is playing Hunter Henry. Seattle is playing at Pittsburgh on Sunday Night Football. Even though the Seahawks are without Russell Wilson, and Geno Smith is starting, Andy, Mike, and Jason are still starting the Seahawks receivers in fantasy lineups. Finally, the Bills take on the Titans on Monday night. RB wise Zack Moss is the only one to start from Buffalo, and Andy expects big things from Stefon Diggs. Jason is benching Ryan Tannehill against the Bills defense with many great QB streamer options out there.
Fantasy Faceoff & Wheel of Shame
The guys continue their weekly lineup battle for DraftKings and Mike finds himself spinning the Wheel of Shame.
This week, Mike had to spin the *Wheel of Shame* during the Fantasy Faceoff segment presented by @DraftKings!
