Preview

The Sixers and Nets entered the 2020-21 season coming off a disappointing season relative to preseason expectations. Many pundits believed the Sixers had a chance to be a Top-2 team in the Eastern conference a season ago, but limped into the playoffs as a disappointing sixth seed.

Despite finishing just behind the Sixers in the standings, Brooklyn finished 7.5 games behind Philadelphia, finishing off a season that ended without Kyrie Irving due to a shoulder injury and Kevin Durant, who was recovering from a torn Achilles.

Fast forward to this season and the Sixers -after some off-season retooling that added legitimate perimeter shooting- find themselves at 7-1 at the top of the Eastern Conference. That floor-spacing has unlocked space for Ben Simmons to attack and kick out to a rejuvinated Tobias Harris, Seth Curry, and Danny Green. It’s also been critical for franchise center Joel Embiid, who’s been playing like an early MVP candidate.

The Nets, meanwhile, are in eighth place in the East at 4-4. After ripping through two preseason games, Brooklyn started the regular season 2-0 with huge wins over Golden State and Boston. That was followed by a two-game losing streak, followed by a split of a a two-game series with Atlanta, a one-point loss to Washington, and a 34-point blowout of the Utah Jazz. Brooklyn’s issue in this game is the absence of Kevin Durant, who’s in the midst of a 7-day quarantine after exposure to COVID-19.

Bets We Like With a Sixers Win

Sixers Win and Over 226 Points (+240, DraftKings)

The safe bet throughout the early portion of the Sixers season has been to take the Sixers to win and under the total point line, but this one is setting up to be a high-scoring affair. The Nets are third in the NBA in scoring, averaging 119.5 points per game. The Sixers are no slouch, either, dropping 114.8 points per game, which is tied for the seventh-most per game in the league. Earlier this week, the Sixers were Top-2 in points allowed and opponent field goal percentage, but after a 141-136 win over the Wizards, Philadelphia has dropped from allowing the second-fewest points per game to the seventh-fewest.

There’s a chance that this game could become a defensive slog, as the Nets and Sixers are the only teams to hold opponents to under 43% shooting from the field. However, given their recent stretch of play and the regularity of their own high-scoring output, as well as the legitimate possibility that the game goes to overtime, this game should go over 226 points.

Joel Embiid to Score 30+ Points and Sixers to Win (+400, FOX Bet)

Joel Embiid has been on an absolute tear this season, as he begins a revenge tour after not being named to an All-NBA team following the 2019-20 season. He dropped 38 points on Washington on Wednesday night on 11-20 shooting and hitting 3-4 shots from deep.

In Embiid’s lone game against the Nets, he racked up 39 points, 16 rebounds, 2 blocks, 2 steals, and 2 assists. In 2018-19 he averaged 30 points per game in four matchups against Brooklyn. It’s safe to say he gets up for playing against a team from the city that never sleeps. If you believe the Sixers will win and Embiid will have a major hand in the victory, get in on this one.

Note: A $25 maximum bet would pay out $125 if the bet hits.

Tobias Harris and Joel Embiid to Combine for Over 60.5 Points (+450, FOX Bet)

To be clear, this isn’t a bet we love, but given the recent play of the players involved and the possibility of overtime, it’s one that’s worth a look. As outlined above, Joel Embiid has the ability to terrorize opponents on the inside, and has done so with regularity against the Brooklyn Nets over the past couple of seasons.

This bet could hinge on Tobias Harris being relied upon heavily on the second half of a back-to-back. Harris is the reigning Eastern Conference Player of the Week and has settled in nicely as a scoring threat for the Sixers, averaging 21.7 points per game over his past three games. In four games a season ago, he averaged 22 points per game. We don’t expect him to have a 30+ point game, but we do see a high potential for Embiid to go for over 30 points and Harris needing a mid-twenties game to make this one hit.

It’s worth a $20 flier, because if it hits, it’ll pay out $110.

Sixers vs. Nets Prediction

Pick: This game could go down to the last possession and has a real shot to go to overtime. Despite the teams’ combined defensive prowess, take the Sixers to win and over 226 points.
