NFL Pick 6 Contest Bets for Week 2: Saints Don’t Need Brees

NFL Week 1 was absolutely full of excitement and surprises. We watched the Cowboys nearly take down the reigning Super Bowl champs with a quarterback who is fresh off a gruesome leg injury. Then there was the Atlanta Falcons team that didn’t look like the Falcons team that their new head coach Arthur Smith had prompt us for. Oh, and nothing too new with the San Francisco 49ers who, despite a win, are already cursed with the injury plague right now. Not to mention the Packers looking like a peewee team with MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers front and center. Is someone paying him to suck? Possibly….

Anyway, it’s Week 2 which means a clean slate and now that we caught a real glimpse at what to expect this season from these teams, it should be a better week of betting.

New York Giants vs. Washington Football Team

Thursday, September 16, 2021 – 8:20 PM EDT at FedExField

Will this week’s Thursday night game be as entertaining as Week 1’s? We can only hope. The Washington Football Team lost its season opener to the LA Chargers on Sunday, 20-16. The good news is that the New York Giants had a worse performance after losing 27-13 to the Denver Broncos. Not to mention the fact that the score could have been a lot worse for New York if they didn’t score a garbage-time touchdown at 27-7.

The bad news for Washington, however, is that their starting quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick went down with a hip injury during the game and headed to the injured reserve on Monday. He was replaced by Taylor Heinicke, who finished the day with 11-for-15 with 122 yards. But even without their QB1, Washington is still the favored team by three points after the Giants totaled 314 yards of offense and allowed 420 yards in a 27-13 loss against the Broncos.

They also managed just 60 yards on the ground which came from quarterback Daniel Jones. Meanwhile, running back Saquon Barkley carried the ball 10 times for 26 yards. For the eighth time in nine years, the Giants will be trying to avoid an 0-2 start...can they do it? Not against this Washington defense led by defensive end Chase Young.

New Orleans Saints vs. Carolina Panthers

Sunday, September 19, 2021 – 1:00 PM EDT at Bank of America Stadium

On Sunday, we learned that the New Orleans Saints don’t need Drew Brees after a 38-3 blowout win against the Green Bay Packers and that quite frankly...the Packers don’t need Aaron Rodgers either.

New Saints starting quarterback, Jameis Winston, threw five touchdowns out of the 20 he attempted and the ground game totaled 171 rushing yards. But, to make up for the absence of No. 1 option Michael Thomas, New Orleans is going to need to see a lot more from Alvin Kamara, who caught just three passes for eight yards.

Another year, another new quarterback for the Carolina Panthers. Sam Darnold made his franchise debut and found revenge against his former team, the New York Jets. Darnold threw for 279 yards and a touchdown and ran one in himself for a two-touchdown game.

Winston had may have had himself a field day in Week 1, but a repeat of five touchdowns seems out of reach, especially against a solid Carolina defense that features Jeremy Chinn and Jaycee Horn. Expect the former interception king to, well, throw some interceptions.

Houston Texans vs. Cleveland Browns

Sunday, September 19,2021 – 1:00 PM EDT at FirstEnergy Stadium

Could the Cleveland Browns be headed to the Super Bowl? It’s still too early to tell, but even with a 33-29 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, they looked like real contenders at the beginning. The Browns had the game by 12 points at the half, but let Kansas City bounce back to a win.

Meanwhile, Houston stomped the Jacksonville Jaguars 37-21. With Deshaun Watson sidelined for personal issues, Tyrod Taylor took the field and threw for 291 yards and two touchdowns. The Texans’ defense energy matched their offense and intercepted No. 1 overall draft pick, Trevor Lawrence, three times.

Of course, Taylor looked like a premier starting NFL quarterback and the defense looked legit, but we have to remember it was just against a rookie quarterback and rookie head coach. Houston’s defense might have known how to stop the lackluster Jacksonville Jaguars, but they’re going to have a tough time putting a stop to running backs Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt.

The spread is hefty here but Baker Mayfield and the Browns are going to fix their mistakes and play the entire way through. A two-touchdown win is doable for these Super Bowl contenders.

San Francisco 49ers vs. Philadelphia Eagles

Sunday, September 19, 2021 – 1:00 PM EDT at Lincoln Financial Field

It wasn’t their best performance, but the San Francisco 49ers managed to hold off a Detroit Lions in Week 1 for a 41-33 victory. While doing so, the Niners took a blow to their secondary and lost cornerback Jason Verrett to a season-ending ACL tear.  Their starting running back Raheem Mostert also went down with a knee injury and will be for the next eight weeks. But, backup running backs JaMycal Hasty and rookie Eli Mitchell took over and each scored touchdowns to save the day.

Now, the Bay Area team will be tasked with facing the Philadelphia Eagles who managed a 32-6 blowout road win over the Atlanta Falcons. First-year Falcons head coach blamed himself for not preparing his team for Week 1. The good news is, Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers are a much better team than the lackluster Falcons squad we saw against the Eagles.

The being said, we will find out for sure this week if the Philadelphia Eagles are actually good under new head coach Nick Sirianni and second-year quarterback Jalen Hurts, or did they just beat up a bad team?

Atlanta Falcons vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Sunday, September 19, 2021 – 4:05 PM EDT at Raymond James Stadium

Speaking of the Atlanta Falcons, their schedule just got even harder this week after a brutal performance vs. Philly. Now, they’re on the road to take on the GOAT Tom Brady and his Super Bowl team.  The Bucs had a tough time against a really good Cowboys team but pulled off the victory. This week gets easier for them against a Falcons offense and defense that has a lot of holes in it.

Hopefully, head coach Arthur Smith can fix the Falcons’ problems, but there are way too many for him to do so in just 5 days. Not to mention his own play-calling problems that need fixing. The Falcons’ offensive line is very brittle and they still don’t have an answer at left guard, for the fourth straight season. Matt Ryan was sacked three times last weekend and two were by the same defender, Javon Hargrave, whom Falcons rookie left guard Jalen Mayfield was paired up with for most of the game.

It’s also going to be a long day for Atlanta’s defensive who faces a pick your poison Bucs’ offense. Hopefully 2002 16th pick  A.J. Terrell can step up against speedster Mike Evans, but I wouldn’t put my money on it. It’s going to be another long season for Atlanta fans.

Dallas Cowboys vs. LA Chargers

Sunday, September 19, 2021 – 4:25 PM EDT at SoFi

Dak Prescott came off a gruesome leg injury and shocked the world last week after nearly beating the reigning Super Bowl champs. He threw for 188 yards with three touchdowns when blitzed. Now he’s set to face a much weaker LA defense and should thrive. Not to mention the few extra nights of rest he will be getting by not playing last Sunday.

The Charges, led by second-year quarter Justin Herbert, could be en route to being an MVP candidate this season. He boasts all of the natural talents it takes to be an elite pass and has a better offensive line this season, so there’s hope for him to find the holes in Dallas’ secondary.

Due to COVID-19, the Cowboys were without their All-Pro guard in Zack Martin which was a deciding factor at first, but Dallas ended up surrendering just one sack on 62 dropbacks vs. Tampa. Against a lesser defense, Prescott should find success running the ball with Ezekiel Elliott and make bigger pass plays to CeeDee Lamb and Amari Cooper.
