New York State of Mind, Odds For Next New York Mayor

US political betting markets are in a New York State of mind, as the iconic city prepares for mayoral elections later in 2021. Incumbent mayor Bill de Blasio has maxed out his eligibility for the role, meaning that a new mayor and administration is set to takeover the prestigious position of one of the world’s most recognizable city’s.

Across multiple online betting sites, Andrew Yang emerges as the top bet of the shortlist of candidates that have declared at this point in early January. Yang, who rose to national attention during the 2020 Democratic primaries, launched his campaign on January 14th and already he leads the polling, and, in turn, the betting.

Yang was long held as one of the best bets to spot for New York mayor picks, but his campaign recently received a major boost that could pay dividends thanks to Martin Luther King III’s endorsement. To get the backing of such a noteworthy figure on the Civil Rights movement landscape, the son of one of America’s figureheads in the fight for rights, equality and justice for all, likely plays a part in elevating Yang’s favorable market outlook even further.

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Yang posted via Youtube Martin Luther King III’s endorsement of his bid to become New York’s next mayor in the upcoming 2021 election. In the video, the son of the Civil Rights leader claimed he was backing Yang’s proposals because they would have aligned with his father’s vision of equality and justice for all, as well his involvement in the Georgia run off sealed this endorsement.

“Endorsing Andrew has special meaning for me this weekend,” he said. “This weekend our nation is celebrating my dad, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I don’t have to tell you how much he advanced racial and economic justice in this country.

“One of my main policy goals, and one of his dreams, was to establish a basic income for all Americans,” King III continued. “Andrew’s commitment to a basic income is why I’m endorsing him, and why we’ve worked tirelessly to support Democrats across the country.”

In response to MLK III’s endorsement, Yang issued a statement to the media saying he was honored to have the support of his friend, Martin Luther King III, “one of America’s longest standing advocates for justice and equality.” Yang added that on the day that we honor “Martin’s father, the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and the historic work he did to create a more equal America,” he is “deeply proud to carry on Dr. King’s vision for a basic income, and with his son standing beside me in this fight, I know we’ll make it a reality.”

Betting on Next New York City Mayor

Bovada Sportsbook (see our Bovada Review) has released a comprehensive list of candidates for the next New York City mayor, with Andrew Yang leading the charge as the (+140) favorite. Eric Adams, Scott Stringer and Raymond McGuire are his nearest threats with the triplet trading anywhere between (+350) and (+550).

It’s worth noting that no female candidate as yet appears to be a serious threat in the running. Maya Wiley, Kathryn Garcia and Diane Morales are a trio of female candidates hoping to be the first woman to secure the coveted position, but their political odds are currently in quadruple-digit obscurity. While Maya Wiley is tipped at a reasonable (+1000), which gives her a fighting chance, the remaining two are quintessential longshots of the race trading at (+3000) and (+8000).
