Monday MMA Mashup – May 24

UFC Fight Night Las Vegas was a fun event and Rob Font made it known that he is a legitimate threat to the world title. Hix boxing may be able to rival that of Petr Yan.

Hopefully, we get the chance to see that fight in the near future as I automatically crown Petr the champ before he even rematches Aljamain Sterling.

Font looked amazing and Cody just couldn’t pull the trigger. He looked like he had a case of the Tyron Woodley’s in there. People have kind of put Cody up on this pedestal because he was the former champ.

That doesn’t make him invincible. It only means he was better than the champion on one night and since then, Cody has not looked great at all, albeit against elite competition in almost every fight.

In the co-main event, Carla Esparza had bettors tearing up their tickets within the first 15 seconds of the fight. A lot of us were on Yan but Carla has evolved, albeit fairly late in her career but nonetheless, she looked like the best version of herself just whipped the best version of herself in a fight and that woman showed up.

I knew within seconds that she was going to win and rushed the fastest live bet I could onto Carla but the betting odds soared pretty quickly.

Elsewhere on the fight card, the Brazilian resurgence continued with wins from Ricardo Ramos, Bruno Silva, and Norma Dumont.

We were only on one of those fighters.
This past Saturday night wasn’t our best night of betting but that’s okay. We have one week off of UFC betting so there is plenty of extra time to put in the extra work needed to get the results that others won’t.

Let’s look back at our betting performance from this past weekend and a glimpse ahead at some of the betting odds available right now for the next UFC Fight Night from Las Vegas.

The Betting Recap

Bruno Silva

We, along with virtually the entire MMA betting community, were on Bruno Silva here against Victor Rodriguez. It was a short night for both of these men as Bruno starched him in the first with one punch.

These guys are Flyweights, man. Whew.

Claudio Silva

He landed some really clean shots but the scouting report on Court McGee says “extremely durable” so we can’t use that as an excuse. Court is a grinder and Claudio is a gasser.

The writing was on the wall but Court had looked so incredibly bad lately that I thought he had turned a corner in his career that he wasn’t going to bounce back from. Well, I was wrong. He looked lighter on his feet than ever and took it to Silva as he Brazilian gassed.

Bill Algeo

I thought the size of El Perfecto would help him defeat the smaller Ricardo Ramos but Bill Algeo was swinging for the fences far too much in there and the smaller man wasn’t there to be hit.

Ricardo was too busy stepping back to land a kick. It was an excellent game plan from the Brazilian and his team, and Bill looked as if he never had a plan, to begin with.

Felicia Spencer

I really hyped this lady up and to her credit, she brought it. Norma Dumont was just too much with her hands, though, particularly with the speed of her strikes.

It was a very close fight but the original opening line of (-350) on Spencer proved to be purely idiotic and our play on her at (-150), I think it was, proved to be foolish also.

Spencer should have used more of the clinch early on to tire the arms of her opponent and score some points herself. She wanted to test herself, though, a little more than stick to a strict game plan.

I understand that’s how it goes sometimes but she has to understand this as well.

Yan Xiaonan

What can we say about Yan here? Her takedown defense looked like it could probably hold up to Carla’s offense. I thought that Yan needed to build some momentum first and she never even got close.

This fight was over the moment Carla got the first takedown. It’s a shame because I felt great about Yan here and even had her in a parlay but Cookie Monster spoiled yet another party.

Rob Font

I have never been so thankful for a Rob Font win in my life!

I have also never gone 0-the whole night if I’m betting on 3 or more fights and it was about to happen if Cody Garbrandt could have done his thing but Rob Font proved to be too long and too precise with his use of the jab.

Rob’s chin held up and so did his defense. He wasn’t hit much at all and most of the fight was just him walking Cody down and peppering him with jabs.

They say you’re only as good as your last fight or perhaps your last bet. I guess that makes us 100% successful then!

UFC Fight Night Las Vegas Preview

Miguel Baeza vs Santiago Ponzinibbio

Here is a fight you don’t want to miss! The Argentine Dagger Santiago Ponzinibbio is a fighter who appeared to be on his way to title contention but injuries forced him out of action for an extended period and in his first fight back, seemed all of out sorts and got slept by Li Jingliang.

That was just 4 months ago, though, and I worry about his brain health.

I remember when a lot of fighters were coming back after 3 months from a bad KO or TKO and then having the same thing happen to them.

You have to rest!
A fight camp is 8-12 weeks so if you fight 4 months later, then you only took off a month or so. That isn’t that much and I really don’t like it for the now 37 year old Ponz. Fighting a guy like Miguel Baeza sounds like a bad idea to begin with and then you’re 37 and only a few months from a nasty knockout…

I don’t know who Ponz’s manager is but I feel like that guy screwed up. Santiago is probably going to look better than he did in his return fight, though, but then again, he didn’t really rack up a lot of Octagon time.

He looked hesitant and got outboxed and slept. That was it.

I like Baeza here and right now, you can get him for (-128) over at BetOnline.AG. This is a steal! He is (-150) at most online sportsbooks so waste zero time getting this play in!

Youssef Zalal vs Sean Woodson

I wrote about this fight last week. I couldn’t believe the betting odds were where they are and they are starting to normalize now but I still feel like we have betting value on The Morrocan Devil at any dog odds.

  • Sean Woodson has been overvalued in every one of his UFC fights and lacks a signature win inside the Octagon.
  • Some might say the same for Zalal, though, as he has only really defeated low level talent.

Don’t think Youseff stinks, though, because he has lost 2 straight fights.

That is why the line is skewed.

He lost to Topuria because Ilia is a very high level fighter and Youseff was able to go the distance with him.

Then, Zalal lost his next fight to a much improved Korean, Seung Woo Choi. Youseff took that fight on extremely short notice and Choi is freaking huge for the weight class. Woodson is too, though…

No, he’s not huge.
He is tall and long for sure but lacks the thickness and strength to compete at a high level in the UFC, in my opinion. You have to have some meat on your bones. Anderson Silva was The Spider but still a big enough guy not to get bullied.

Zalal isn’t a bully, though, and he might struggle to get this fight to the mat as he won’t have leverage on his side against The Sniper. I think it is an even fight, though, and I even lean towards the current underdog.

In Conclusion

When you have a bad performance, you have to be able to let it go but not before you reflect. Ask yourself why did I lose? How did it happen? What was I thinking?! I did switch up my prediction routine last week but I am not going to blame that.

I heard Conor McGregor talking about superstitions one time and it has changed my opinion on them forever. He was saying that believing in them is pure weakness. Someone had asked him about pre-fight rituals and if he had any. His response was genius to me. He said if you believe that one little happenstance can change the course of the fight, then you already have a losing mindset.

You have to go into a fight with an iron clad mind that nothing can stop you. Well, calf kicks can certainly stop you from fighting the way you want to fight. Let’s hope Mystic Mac has an answer for them in the rematch coming up this Summer because I want to see these two go at it for at least 3 rounds.
