MLB Playoffs: Who’s in and who’s out of the World Series picture?

The Major League Baseball playoffs are nearing and will begin on Tuesday, October 5. The MLB playoff picture is coming into view and the World Series is too. This week, let’s take a look at the playoffs and the potential World Series winners.

Last season’s playoffs featured 16 teams due to the regular season being shortened to 60 games. The MLB playoffs are back to 10 teams for this postseason. While it seems like a lot of teams to some of us baseball fans. The regular season ends on Sunday, October 3.

What will the MLB playoffs look like in 2021?

You may not remember the playoffs pre-COVID, so let’s take a look at the structure of this year’s format.

  • 3 division winners in the AL and NL will advance directly to the League Division Series.
  • The non-division winners with the 2 best regular-season records will play the Wild Card Game,
  • The winner of the Wild Card Game advance to play the team with the league’s best record in the LDS.
  • The LDS is the best of five.
  • The League Championship Series and World Series are best-of-seven

The AL Wild Card Game will be played on Tuesday, October 5 while the NL Wild Card Game will take place a day later, Wednesday, October 6.

The ALDS will begin on Thursday, October 7 and the NLDS will start on Friday, October 8. Friday, October 15 will see the start of the ALCS, and October 16 is the beginning of the NLC. The World Series begins Tuesday, October 26.

Which teams have made the MLB playoffs?

The full MLB playoff picture has not been drawn as yet. However, several teams have qualified for the postseason. So, who’s in?

  • Tampa Bay Rays — AL East
  • Chicago White Sox — AL Central
  • Milwaukee Brewers — NL Central
  • San Francisco Giants — NL West
  • LA Dodgers — NL West
  • St. Louis Cardinals — NL West

In the NL East, the Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies are still battling for the division crown. In the AL West, the Houston Astros and Oakland A’s are fighting for the top spot. By the time you read this, both division winners could be sorted.

The New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, and Seattle Mariners all have a shot at the AL Wild Card, but it looks, for now, as though the Yankees will clinch one of the spots. The only thing that needs to be determined in the NL is which team will win the East.
