MLB Picks May 9: Dodgers and Angels Battle

With a little over a month of the MLB season in the books, teams are trying to separate themselves from the pack. There are several good weekend matchups with the cross-city battle between the Dodgers and Angels top on the list.

Los Angeles Dodgers versus Los Angeles Angels

The defending World Series champions have lost eight of their last 10 games and are 3rd in the NL West. They face the Angels, last in the AL West. The Angels are 4-6 over their last ten and have a +6 to +1 advantage on the Power Ranking Indicator. Despite the poor play, the Dodgers are mysteriously “burning hot” on the Team Strength Oscillator versus “average down” for the Angels. The Totals Predictor shows both teams involved in high-scoring games, so bet the “over”.  The starting pitchers have not yet been named for this one. Look for the Dodgers to get back on track and come away with a win.

Washington Nationals versus New York Yankees

The Nationals are 4th in the NL East and the Yankees are 2nd in the AL East. The Yankees are “ice cold down” and +25 on the Power Ranking Indicator versus “ice cold up” and +13 for the Nationals. Joe Ross is scheduled to pitch for the Nationals and Domingo German is set to start for the Yankees. Ross is 2-2 with a 4.39 ERA and +385 on the Pitcher Profit Oscillator. German is 2-2, 4.32, and +738, respectively. The Totals Predictor indicates betting “under” would be a smart play. The Scores Predictor has the Nationals by a 5-4 margin with 63 percent confidence. I will go the other way and pick the Yankees to prevail at home by a slim margin.

Chicago White Sox versus Kansas City Royals

Two AL West teams with the same record battle this weekend. The White Sox are “average down” and +21 on the Power Ranking Indicator and the Royals are “burning hot” and +8. The Totals Predictor shows the teams on opposite sides of the “over/under” line, so it’s wise to avoid that bet. The Scores Predictor gives 69 percent confidence in a 6-4 win for the Royals. We’ll go with that and predict a home win for the Royals.  Note the line before the bet. If it’s over 1 1/2, pick the Royals to cover. If not, pick the White Sox to cover.

Pittsburgh Pirates versus Chicago Cubs

The Cubs are in the middle of the pack in the NL Central and the Pirates are battling to get out of the basement. Chicago has a +22 to +4 advantage on the Power Ranking Indicator, while the Pirates are “burning hot” versus “ice cold down”. Tyler Anderson is scheduled to pitch for the Pirates, and Kyle Hendricks is set to take the mound for the Cubs. Andreson is 2-3 with a 3.23 ERA and -1710 on the Pitcher Profit Oscillator. Hendricks is 2-3 with a 6.07 ERA and +67. The two teams have split the meetings so far this year. Hendricks has struggled but is a better overall bet and the Cubs have a stronger team. Go with the Cubs to win and cover.

Philadelphia Phillies versus Atlanta Braves

The Phillies and Braves battle in the tight NL East. Both teams are “ice cold down” and the Phillies have a +24 to +9 advantage on the Power Ranking Indicator. Aaron Nola is scheduled to go for the Phillies and the Braves have yet to name their starter. Nola is 3-1 with a 2.89 ERA but has been a poor bet at -292 dollars. The teams are trending on opposite sides of the over/under line, so it’s best to avoid that bet. The scores predictor has the Braves with an easy 7-3 win with 64 percent confidence. The Braves could win, but I think in a much tighter game. Check the line before the game. Pick the Braves to win but if the line is under 2 and take the Phillies to cover.
