Mesut Ozil is ready to ‘leave money on the table’ to force a move away from Arsenal in the January transfer window, according to reports.
Ozil has six months left on his £350,000-a-week contract in north London, which means he is set to earn around £7million between now and the end of the season.
But David Ornstein of The Athletic has claimed the German is willing to forget about a possible pay-off to secure a move away from the Premier League side this month.
It is suggested there are already talks underway between the club and the player over the early termination of his contract, amid reports linking the midfielder with possible moves to the Turkish Super Lig and Major League Soccer.
But, it is said that if a compromise is not found between both parties, Ozil will instead remain at Arsenal to see out his mega-money deal.
He would continue to train with the first-team until he departs, bringing an end to a rollercoaster eight years with the Gunners.
It appears Ozil has changed his mind over his future at Arsenal, having previously revealed his plans to stay at the club until his contract expired.
The midfielder even said he was hoping to play again before he left, with fans recently calling for Ozil to return to the team and sending a message to Mikel Arteta that they wanted him back.
Arteta left Ozil out of his Premier League and Europa League squads for the first half of the season.
Ozil was not told about the decision until moments before the summer transfer window closed, meaning there wasn’t enough time to arrange a possible exit knowing that he wouldn’t be playing until at least the New Year.
The manager can recall Ozil to his team this month, but The Athletic claim there is ‘no anticipation’ for that to happen, and so the outcast is said to be willing to forgo his final payment to finally get out of the Emirates.
Ozil has been linked with a move to Fenerbahce as well as a number of MLS clubs, including DC United.
The player recently ramped up the speculation over his next destination by revealing in a Twitter Q&A that he wants to play in Turkey and the United States before he hangs up his boots.
