‘Leeds get too much praise, they defend like a pub team!’ – talkSPORT host confused by Marcelo Bielsa’s side after Premier League defeat to Everton

Leeds are the envy of other Premier League teams when they attack, says talkSPORT host Jason Cundy, but he claims that means very little if they keep defending ‘like a pub team’.

And the former Chelsea and Tottenham defender believes Marcelo Bielsa’s team get ‘too much praise’.

Leeds suffered their tenth defeat of the season on Wednesday night as they lost 2-1 to Everton at Elland Road.

The Whites have been hailed as one of the most entertaining teams to watch this season, thanks to their no-holds-barred, rip roaring attacking performances.

But for all of their forward prowess, Bielsa’s side now have more defeats in the Premier League this season than wins – nine – with the home reverse to Everton leaving them 11th in the table.

That is pretty impressive for the Yorkshire club’s first season back in the top flight for over a decade, but perhaps not where you’d expect them to be given the praise they’ve had.

And speaking on Thursday night’s Sports Bar, host Cundy seemed… confused.

“Leeds… what? They’re just a funny side, Leeds. They’ll give you opportunities. You wouldn’t ever have them on your accumulator coupon.

“I think they get too much praise.

“When they go forward that’s what you want to see, you want to see team attack. But when you see them defend, certain for the first goal, it’s like a pub league!”

Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored his first goal in eight Premier League games after Toffees captain Gylfi Sigurdsson opened the scoring inside ten minutes, as Raphinha’s goal after the break was not enough to inspire another Leeds comeback.

The Whites came from a goal down to beat Leicester 3-1 last time out, but were guilty of a catalogue of errors for Everton’s goals.

Nevertheless, Bielsa insists his side did enough to at least claim a point, after Ezgjan Alioski’s volley direct from Raphinha’s first-half corner hit a post and Patrick Bamford’s second-half header looped on to the crossbar.

“I think we did enough to draw the game and even then we could have won it,” Bielsa said after the game.

“That’s to say we had enough chances in the first half and the second half to draw the game.

“We managed to avoid the third goal and we scored and got back into the game, and we had plenty of time to try and win it.”
