We have been dealing with the world health crisis for almost a year now. Throughout this time, online sportsbooks and gambling websites have thrived because they provide their users with a casino experience that’s accessible from a smartphone.
The reopening process began slowly at the end of April 2020. As of February 2021, around 90% of commercial and tribal land-based casinos are currently open. I would love to tell you we are out of the woods, but there is a catch.
States are acting independently, and any implemented shutdowns are for shorter periods of time. On this page, you’ll find several updates on the land-based casino openings across the country to give you a better picture of the progress made since last March.
The Impact of Casino Closures
Before I became I full-time writer, I was employed by a small regional company as a route sales representative in Pennsylvania. It was my job to manage a particular sales territory, supplying grocery stores and restaurants in that area on a weekly basis. One of my accounts was a land-based casino in the Northern West Virginia panhandle.
I remember that day, in March of 2020, when I was told they were suspending their operations until further notice due to an impending health crisis.
Within the span of a few weeks, all gambling establishments in the United States were brought to a screeching halt. The closure of both land-based casinos and restaurants greatly impacted workers all over the country, myself included. States like Pennsylvania and Nevada, which heavily relied on revenue from these establishments, were heavily affected by the shutdown.
Thankfully, a slow reopening process began within the next month, in April of that year. By June, many casinos and restaurants were beginning to make a strong comeback. Since then, more land-based casinos have since implemented safety measures to keep their businesses thriving. While there have been some setbacks and reclosures within the past year, 90% of establishments are open.
The Big Picture
Since March 2020, the country has yet to see 100% reopening of all casinos, but we are certainly on the right track to get there. 911 out of 998 reopened casinos is not bad at all.
All information is current as of February 18th, 2021.

A New Way of Doing Business
Although 90% of casinos are open and operating, it is not business as usual for most.
Most tribal casinos have sovereignty to regulate and conduct business how they see fit. For the most part, mandates from the state do not apply to these establishments. They have the carte blanche to operate independently of the governing bodies.
On your next trip to a land-based casino near you, I would not be surprised if they had several precautions already in place for their staff and guests.
CDC Guidelines and Recommendations
Casinos and other gambling outfits are now tasked with encouraging certain behaviors to keep customers and staff safe. They have also suggested additional precautions and operating procedures to ensure a healthy environment.
Customers or staff should stay home if they feel ill.
Everyone is encouraged to wash their hands often, adequately cover any coughing or sneezing, and avoid touching their face.
If possible, wear a mask, especially in large crowds and when distancing is not possible.
New Operating Procedures
Rigorous cleaning and disinfecting of all surfaces
Stocking up adequate supplies such as hand sanitizer, soap, and masks
Ensuring proper ventilation and water systems
Addition of new signs with messages promoting protective measures
Inclusion of physical barriers like partitions and plexiglass
Closing off or restricting capacity on communal spaces to reduce risk

Recent Casino Closures and Reopenings
There have been a few recent closures in the past week, but not due to any health-related concerns.
On February 15, we gained the opening of one land-based casino—Route 66 Casino Hotel in New Mexico. .
On February 16, Three Cherokee Nation casinos in Oklahoma closed due to severe winter weather. American Gaming Association’s COVID-19 Casino Tracker is a great tool to get an accurate picture of what is going on with all casinos across the nation.
Progress is Being Made!
If you enjoy spending your free time making some extra cash at in-person casinos, the great news is that the one down the road from you is most likely open and operating!
But 90% of land-based casinos are currently up and running, so this gives you an excellent opportunity to get out of the house and enjoy some normalcy after a strange, unconventional year.
