Melinda Gates filed for divorce from her husband of 27 years in May 2021. They’ve provided no official reason for the breakup, but court documents describe the marriage as “irretrievably broken.”
The couple issued a joint statement repeating those sentiments: “We no longer believe we can grow together as a couple in this next phase of our lives.”
A former employee told reporters that the couple has lived in separate wings of their $100 million Washington mansion for several years.
Now, their legal teams are ironing out a settlement. An estimated $130 billion in assets are on the line, and the Gates had no prenuptial agreement. It’s expected to be one of the costliest divorces of all time. Gates has already transferred $850 million in stock to Melinda, reportedly part of a $3 billion package going to his soon-to-be ex-wife.

Who knew Bill Gates was such a ladies’ man?! Although, based on the stories released so far, the face of Microsoft has an insatiable sexual appetite, terrible judgment, and an even worse pick-up game.

The piece describes several instances of Gates allegedly exhibiting “questionable conduct in work-related settings,” and making advances on women employed by Microsoft and the Gates Foundation — behavior that persisted for nearly three decades of marriage.
- “In 2006, for example, he attended a presentation by a female Microsoft employee. Mr. Gates, who at the time was the company’s chairman, left the meeting and immediately emailed the woman to ask her out to dinner, according to two people familiar with the exchange.”
- “A year or two later, Mr. Gates was on a trip to New York on behalf of the Gates Foundation. He was traveling with a woman who worked for the foundation. Standing with her at a cocktail party, Mr. Gates lowered his voice and said: ‘I want to see you. Will you have dinner with me?’ according to the woman.”
- “Six current and former employees of Microsoft, the foundation and the firm that manages the Gates’s fortune said those incidents, and others more recently, at times created an uncomfortable workplace environment. Mr. Gates was known for making clumsy approaches to women in and out of the office. His behavior fueled widespread chatter among employees about his personal life.”
The Wall Street Journal published a separate article detailing an investigation by Microsoft’s board of directors into a “sexual relationship” between Gates and an employee who deemed the interaction inappropriate.
Bill Gates admitted that in 2000, he had an extramarital affair with a Microsoft engineer, prompting the board to investigate. The MS executive resigned from the board before the inquiry concluded.
Friend of Jeffrey Epstein
According to multiple outlets, Bill’s friendship with Jeffery Epstein played a pivotal role in Melinda’s decision to file for divorce. The two men were first acquainted in January 2011, three years after Epstein’s conviction for procuring a child for prostitution.
An article from The Daily Beast claims that Epstein gave Bill advice on ending his marriage after the Microsoft co-founder spent visits to the financier’s mansion complaining about his wife.
“Gates used the gatherings at Epstein’s $77 million New York townhouse as an escape from what he told Epstein was a ‘toxic’ marriage, a topic both men found humorous, a person who attended the meetings told The Daily Beast.
“The billionaire met Epstein dozens of times starting in 2011 and continuing through to 2014 mostly at the financier’s Manhattan home—a substantially higher number than has been previously reported. Their conversations took place years before Bill and Melinda Gates announced this month that they were splitting up.”
Mrs. Gates is said to have expressed anger over Bill’s association with a known sex trafficker. A source told People, “Epstein is definitely a sore spot. That’s a long time for issues to fester.”
“She was totally opposed to what she considered shady dealings and some other issues he wanted to pursue in the business area,” likely referring to rumors that Gates wanted to help rehabilitate the late money manager’s image, possibly by using him in the Gates Foundation’s philanthropy work.
“The people familiar with the matter said Gates found freedom in Epstein’s lair, where he met a rotating cast of bold-faced names and discussed worldly issues in between rounds of jokes and gossip—a ‘men’s club’ atmosphere that irritated Melinda.
“‘[It’s] not an overstatement. Going to Jeffrey’s was a respite from his marriage. It was a way of getting away from Melinda,’ one of the people who was at several of the meetings said, adding that Epstein and Gates ‘were very close.’”
Epstein proved to be the last straw.
Melinda began meeting divorce lawyers shortly after the publication of a 2019 exposé highlighting Bill Gates’ relationship with the convicted sex offender who “committed suicide” (wink wink, nudge nudge) that same year.
Marriage Outlook
If you’re betting on a Bill Gates upset, you need him to get remarried in a hurry, as a cynical PR move meant to project stability and growth and distance himself from the womanizer talk. If he returns to monogamy, the public will soon forget May’s bad headlines and chalk up his divorce from Melinda as two people growing apart, not because of Gates’s sociopathic character flaws.

The more I’ve read about Jeff Bezos’s divorce from ex-wife MacKenzie and subsequent relationship with Lauren Sanchez, the more apparent it becomes that the Amazon uber-billionaire is rightly a heavy betting favorite.
Divorce
Jeff Bezos and MacKenzie Scott married in 1993 after meeting at the hedge fund D.E. Shaw & Co. in New York, one year before founding Amazon. Scott was the company’s first employee. The couple had four kids together during 25 years of marriage.
On January 9, 2019, the Bezos’ released joint statements announcing their divorce on Twitter, explaining they’d decided to split “after a long period of loving exploration and trial separation.” Unlike the contentious Gates’ breakup, the Amazon billionaires’ divorce was amicable. Both parties even expressed a desire to remain friends.

The Bezos’s divorce settlement went smoothly as well. MacKenzie gave her ex-husband 75% of the Amazon stock they owned together, voting control over her shares and her total interests in the Washington Post and Blue Origin.
Scott’s remaining 25% stake in Amazon was worth an estimated $38 billion when the divorce was finalized on April 4, 2019. MacKenzie instantly became one of the richest women in the world.

Hours after Jeff and MacKenzie released their statement; the National Enquirer reported that Jeff was having an affair with Lauren Sanchez, a former TV anchor and the wife of WME talent agent Patrick Whitesell. Sanchez and Whitesell began divorce proceedings shortly after the story went public.
