J.J. Redick Announces Retirement from NBA

After a noteworthy 15 seasons in the NBA, 37-year-old shooting guard J.J. Redick announced his retirement on his popular podcast “The Old Man & the Three.”

“I never could have imagined if I would play basketball for this long,” says Redick.

“Going into last season, I wanted it to be my last year, but I wasn’t sure how it would play out. I would like to describe last season as a seven mont exercise in coming face to face with my own athletic mortality.”

Redick, who last suited up for the Dallas Mavericks back in May, was selected 11th overall by the Orlando Magic in 2006 after a stellar collegiate career at Duke (he’s the school’s all-time leading scorer with 2,769 points made).

He would then go on to play on six different NBA teams throughout his career, including stops with the Milwaukee Bucks, Los Angeles Clippers, Philadelphia 76ers during his prime.

Redick has averaged 12.8 points per game throughout his career, but he was more revered for his 3-point shooting, landing in the top-15 of career 3-pointers (1,950) and just outside the top-15 in career 3-point percent (41.5).

Arguably his best season came in 2015-16 as a member of the Clippers, as he averaged 16.3 points per game while shooting 48.0 percent from the field and 47.5 percent on 3-pointers while starting every game that season.
