Here we are, under two weeks left in the regular season. Four of the six divisions should be clinched within the next week, with all but one of the Wild Cards still a mess. With that, what underdogs have a shot on Monday?
We have an even dozen contests on the Monday docket, including a doubleheader between Kansas City and Cleveland. Most of the games either have large money lines, obscure pitchers, or a bunch of mediocre ones.
That makes our job tougher, but we have been grinding out winners since April, thus, this mission is to finish with a flourish. We’ve studied the MLB odds and here is what we have to start your week.
Chicago White Sox vs. Detroit Tigers
Monday, September 20, 2021 – 06:40 PM EDT at Comerica Park
The Chicago White Sox have all but clinched the AL Central. Unfortunately, they have played like a team lacking in motivation, winning just five of their last 11 games.
Evidently, a desire to be the second seed in the AL has not been enough reason to play with greater urgency and they still trail Houston by three games in the loss column for that spot.
Detroit is in a rebuilding process. The Tigers have taken legitimate steps forward in putting together a 72-78 record, which makes surpassing .500 a goal that could well be achievable next year.
How Detroit Dumps Chicago as Large Underdogs
Sport betting sites like Heritage Sports (visit our Heritage Sports Review) have the Tigers as massive +191 underdogs. Though it might be justified with Carlos Rodon (12-5, 2.38 ERA) facing Detroit’s Matt Manning (4-6, 5.75).
Why do the Tigers have a chance? They have won seven of ten and they split a weekend series with the AL’s best, at Tampa Bay, taking the last two to feel good about themselves.
Though Rodon has pitched excellently all season, including twice this year against Detroit (2-0, two runs allowed over 13 innings), for his career he has a 5.28 ERA in eight starts against Detroit.
Manning and his teammates are 5-3 at Comerica this year, which props the door open. Detroit is a respectable 10-7 (+9.5 Units) as a home underdog of +150 to +200 and 11-6 (+12.9 Units) vs. teams outscoring foes by 0.5 or more runs a game in the second half of the season.
It’s September baseball, anything is possible.

Seattle Mariners vs. Oakland Athletics
Monday, September 20, 2021 - 09:40 PM EDT at RingCentral Coliseum
Seattle is a long shot at this time to make it as a Wild Card, now four games behind Boston and Toronto for the two slots and also having the Yankees and their opponent tonight, Oakland, ahead of them.
Nonetheless, manager Scott Servais will expect his team to play hard until they are eliminated. The Mariners have far exceeded expectations and have several building blocks in place to keep moving forward in 2022.
Oakland was not as talented as the last couple of seasons coming into the year and that has played out with their 82-67.
Good, not elite. The A’s have 13 confrontations remaining and probably need to win ten to lock up a playoff bid. That begins tonight.
How the Mariners Throw the A’s Overboard
Oakland’s Sean Manaea (10-9, 3.95) has pitched well, but not great this season, which is part of why his club is in its current predicament.
To his credit, he threw like a stud in two starts versus the Mariners (2-0, one runs conceded in 16 innings), but with the total at 8.5, the A’s are nothing more than a 50-50 bet at home (25-25) when the total is 8 to 8.5 this season.
The Pick
The M’s Tyler Anderson (6-9, 4.14) has pitched better than his record with his 14-13 mark (Mariners record) in his 27 starts. When the lefty and his teammates have faced winning clubs, this combination is 9-5 this season.
And in the second half of the year, the Athletics are 13-24 when playing against a team with a winning record. For today's MLB pick, a Seattle surprise could be in store.
