Cristiano Ronaldo was roundly criticised for his touchline antics in the Champions League this week, but it’s not the first time he’s tried to take management into his own hands.
Ronaldo made his second Champions League debut for Manchester United on Tuesday and gave a good account of himself with an early goal against Young Boys.
Things soon took a turn for the worse though, and after Aaron Wan-Bissaka was sent off, the Swiss side scored two second-half goals to condemn Man United to a shock defeat.
Ronaldo was substituted in the 72nd minute and replaced by Jesse Lingard, whose mistake led to the eventual winner.
Being taken off didn’t stop Ronaldo from staying involved in the match though.
The 36-year-old barely made contact with the substitute bench before he was up on his feet remonstrating to his teammates alongside manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
On Ronaldo’s antics, former Man United teammate Rio Ferdinand said: “If I’m the manager, I’ve got to be honest, I’m telling him to sit down.”
Meanwhile, talkSPORT’s Martin Keown said: “He has to know his place, and he needs to take his seat.
“I’m pretty certain Solskjaer will deal with that in the right way, he may even encourage it, but there’s only one manager.
“I don’t think under Sir Alex Ferguson it would’ve got this far, maybe he would have actually mentioned it to him some time sooner.”
However, what Ronaldo did in Bern was nothing compared to the Euro 2016 final where he cut a very animated figure indeed.
Ronaldo made a tearful exit from Portugal’s clash against France as he picked up an early injury.
However, he made sure he’d offer his teammates all the encouragement he could from the sidelines.
After Eder put Portugal in front in extra-time, Ronaldo was on the edge of the technical area barking instructions at the players at the same time as Portugal head coach Fernando Santos.
In his excitement, Ronaldo was even seen manhandling and playfully pushing a then 61-year-old Santos as Portugal closed in on the win.
It won’t be advisable for Ronaldo to become coach during Man United’s Premier League trip to West Ham on Sunday, however, there’s no doubting Solskjaer had it much easier than Santos.
