Yesterday started out normal enough. After seeing six upsets on Friday, including 15th seeded Oral Roberts knocking off 2nd seeded Ohio State, Saturday’s action was all chalk throughout much of the day. Eastern Washington gave Kansas a little scare, and Creighton barely survived against UCSB, but through 9 games, the higher seed was 9-0. Then the madness started back up again!
Maryland defeated UCONN, a winning pick that we brought you in our parlay of the day picks yesterday. That game was quickly followed by another blockbuster upset when 4th seeded Virginia again got upset, this time by the Ohio Bobcats. Tony Bennet now has two first round exits in the last three seasons, leading the Cavaliers program. In the late games, UCLA beat BYU, another winning pick that we gave you yesterday, and our assertion that the PAC-12 was criminally underrated coming into this tournament has proven true as the league is 5-0 in the tournament so far.
MADNESS!!

The final game of the night ended up being the biggest upset of the day, as the Texas Longhorns lost to Abilene Christian at the buzzer in a thriller. Yesterday in our parlay of the day picks, I said, and I quote, “Do not sleep on Abilene Christian. I repeat, do not sleep on Abilene Christian.” I knew the Wildcats were for real, and it was yet another underdog winner that we gave you yesterday. Will the madness and upsets continue today? Let’s find out!
Point Spread Parlay
Not all parlays are the same. In this first section, we are going to focus on point spread parlays. A point spread parlay is a parlay bet where all of the games bet are point spreads, and you will have to lay a little juice on each bet. A standard 3-team point spread parlay will payout 6-1, a 4-teamer pays out 11-1, and a 10-teamer pays out a whopping 720-1! As you can see, the payouts can get really big, really fast, on point spread parlays!
Wisconsin Badgers (+6.5) at Baylor Bears
Late in the season, there were two elite teams that I felt were being overrated. The first team was Ohio State, and we saw what happened to the Buckeyes when they got bounced from the Big Dance by Oral Roberts in an upset that was shocking to most people, but not to me. The other team that I felt was a bit fraudulent, was the Baylor Bears. That’s not to say that I don’t think Baylor is a good team, they are certainly very talented. I just feel strongly that they are going to have an earlier than expected exit from this tournament.
Baylor is considered by many to be at the absolute minimum one of the top four teams in the nation, and for much of the season, there were a lot of folks claiming that Baylor was the best team in the country, even better than Gonzaga. I never bought into all that hype, and even when the Bears were winning nearly every game, I always felt that they were getting a bit lucky to stay undefeated. Baylor had their non-conference game with Gonzaga canceled at the last minute, they only had to play West Virginia and Texas once instead of twice as the games got canceled due to COVId-19, and while it is hard to poke holes in a resume as good as the one Baylor has, even Bears fans have to admit they haven’t played their best in the last month.

The Bears barely snuck past bad Iowa State and Kansas State teams late in the regular season and they needed overtime to beat West Virginia. They got blown out by Kansas in Lawrence, and they lost to Oklahoma State by 9-points in the Big 12 tournament. In their last 7 games before the NCAA tournament, they were 5-2, with two blowout losses and three wins that were one possession games late. That’s not how you want to be playing when you hit the tournament.
For Wisconsin, the Badgers weren’t playing well at the end of the season either, as a brutal stretch of schedule saw them lose six of their last nine games. All of those losses came to teams ranked in the top-19 on Kenpom, and five of them came to teams in the top-6. The Badgers looked great in their opening round game against North Carolina, handing Roy Williams his first-ever loss in the round of 64 after Williams started his career by going 29-0 in the opening round. Wisconsin battered the Tar Heels to the tune of a 23-point beatdown, and they are ready to shock the world today.
Let’s keep on dancing, Wisconsin!#OnWisconsin » #MarchMadness pic.twitter.com/CYBZl84K6b
— Wisconsin Basketball (@BadgerMBB) March 20, 2021
This game is going to be very tightly contested. The Badgers have played such a nasty schedule that their record doesn’t look all that attractive, but Kenpom has Wisconsin at #12 right now, so make no mistake, this is a very good team. This will be the 10th time this year Wisconsin is playing against a team ranked in the top-10 on Kenpom, and they aren’t going to be remotely intimidated by the Bears. Will the Badgers pull off the outright upset in this one? Only time will tell. But in a tournament that has already seen so many upsets, nothing would shock me at this point. I am backing the Badgers with the points.
Oral Roberts Golden Eagles (+9) at Florida Gators
Does the slipper fit for Oral Roberts? The Golden Eagles joined an elite club of just nine teams that have ever won an NCAA tournament game as a #15 seed when they beat Ohio State on Friday. That win wasn’t one of those games where the underdog gets red-hot from the perimeter and gets lucky and flukes their way to a win. The Golden Eagles led throughout and shot just 31% from deep and 35% from the field. Oral Roberts won the game on defense, forcing Ohio State into 16 costly turnovers. The Golden Eagles are on top of the world right now, and after inheriting the Buckeyes 2-seed, they have another winnable game today against Florida.

Trip to the Sweet 16 at stake as #ORUMBB faces Florida at 6:45 p.m. on truTV#GoldenStandard pic.twitter.com/HLWs4Wu5JG— ORU Basketball (@ORUMBB) March 21, 2021
The Gators were not a team that I expected to go very far in this tournament. They lost their best player early in the season, and before beating Virginia Tech in overtime on Friday night, they hadn’t beaten a tournament-level team since January. Of those 9 teams to win as #15 seeds, only 1 followed it up with a trip to the Sweet 16, Florida Gulf Coast in 2013. Does this Oral Roberts team have that same swagger as Dunk City did nearly a decade ago? We will find out tonight, as I think the Golden Eagles are going to give the Gators all that they can handle. I see Florida winning and advancing, but it is hard not to love being able to back Oral Roberts getting so many points. I’ll take the Golden Eagles to stay competitive and cover the spread.
North Texas Mean Green (+6) at Villanova Wildcats
With so many double digit seeds advancing through the first round, we are bound to see at least a couple of them survive and make it to the Sweet 16. North Texas just might be that team, as they get to play a Villanova team that is nowhere near their full strength. Villanova has been forced to play without their senior leader, All-American point guard Collin Gillespie, and they have been shaky at best in the last month. The Wildcats let Winthrop hang around for much of their first-round game before pulling away late, and Jay Wright’s team knows they are going to be on upset alert tonight.
On to the next one.

Like many of these double digit seeds, it was hard to see this late season push coming from North Texas. I actually picked the Mean Green in the preseason to win Conference USA, but after underperforming much of the year, they never lived up to that hype. The Mean Green are making up for lost time now, though, as they have won five straight games, with the last three wins coming over top-100 teams. They beat a very talented Purdue team in their last game, and they are poised to take advantage of an undermanned Wildcats squad. I am going to take the points and back North Texas, and I won’t at all be shocked if they pull off the upset and win this game outright.
Oregon State Beavers (+6) at Oklahoma State Cowboys
There might not be a guy out there that has been hammering harder on Oregon State than I have in the last several weeks. I bet on them in every game on the PAC-12 tournament, and they cashed every one of my tickets, and I bet on them against Tennessee in their first round game, and once again, they picked up an upset victory. I’m not ready to call this a UCONN with Kemba Walker kind of run just yet, but it is starting to look very reminiscent of that Huskies team that came out of nowhere to win their league tournament and rode that momentum to an unlikely national title. The problem for the Beavers in this game, is that they run into a team that is nearly as hot as they are, against a streaking Oklahoma State team.

— Oregon State Hoops (@BeaverMBB) March 21, 2021
The Cowboys have won 9 of their last 11 games, with wins over Baylor, West Virginia, Oklahoma, and Texas Tech. They had early season wins over the likes of Arkansas, Kansas, Wichita State, and Oral Roberts as well, and the Cowboys have one of the more impressive resumes of any team in the nation. The Cowboys had to come back on Liberty in their opening game of the tournament, and it was a much closer contest than the 69-60 final score might lead you to believe as the Flames led at halftime and the game was tight until the final few minutes of action. The PAC-12 is playing really well right now, and this one is going to be close. If I had to take a hard stance on an outright winner, I would lean towards the Cowboys, but I won’t pass up on the opportunity to back the Beavers getting this many points.
Rutgers Scarlet Knights (+9) at Houston Cougars
It hasn’t been a great tournament for the Big 10. Michigan State lost in their first four game with UCLA, Purdue and Ohio State both got bounced as highly seeded huge favorites, and Iowa and Michigan both failed to cover in their closer than expected wins. But despite the league struggling, Rutgers played well in their win over Clemson, ending the Tigers season with a 60-56 victory. Similar to Wisconsin, the Scarlet Knights have only lost to teams in the top-100 this season, and 7 of their 11 losses this year have come to teams currently ranked in the top-12 on Kenpom. Rutgers has played the 7th toughest schedule in the nation this season, and they have a win over Illinois on their resume, as well as top-50 wins over Syracuse, Maryland, Purdue, Indiana, and Clemson.
We play again today!

For Houston, the Cougars have had a very different season, as they played a powder puff schedule ranked outside of the top-100 nationally, and they have only played one game against the Kenpom top-40, a win over Texas Tech early in the year. The analytics love Houston as they are very efficient on both sides of the floor, but they are going to face a battle-tested Rutgers team that won’t back down. The Scarlet Knights have single digit losses to Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Maryland, and that is what I see happening in this game. The Cougars will find a way to gut out the win, but Rutgers is going to make them earn it and cover the spread along the way.

Syracuse Orange at West Virginia Mountaineers (-182)
This game pits two of the winningest coaches of all-time against each other in Jim Boeheim and Bob Huggins. Boeheim is 2nd in wins for a head coach with over a thousand victories, and Huggins joined the 900 club with the Mountaineer’s first round win over Morehead State. Boeheim has a national title on his resume, but despite several trips to the Sweet 16 and a trip to the Final Four, Huggins still hasn’t won it all. He is hoping to change that this season as he leads another strong team into the NCAA tournament with dreams of cutting down the nets.
West Virginia has ten wins over the top-100, and the Mountaineers have done an exceptional job of winning games away from Morgantown this season. West Virginia has neutral floor wins over Western Kentucky and VCU and almost handed the Gonzaga Bulldogs a loss in the non-conference as well, giving the Bulldogs their toughest game of the season. The Mountaineers have true road wins at Georgetown, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, and Texas, all teams playing in the NCAA tournament. The Mountaineers know how to win in hostile territory.

It seems that almost every year, Syracuse finds itself sitting right at the cut line of the NCAA tournament. They almost always seem to find a way to sneak into the Big Dance, and more often than not, they do damage once they get in. That was the case again this year, as the Orange were one of the last teams to get their dance cards punched, but they took full advantage of the opportunity with a dominating win over San Diego State. I hate to fade Boeheim in March, as the guy is always a tough out, but I see this as the end of the road for the ‘Cuse. The only way I see the Orange winning this game is if Buddy Boeheim can’t miss a shot, something that absolutely could happen, but it’s fairly unlikely against this stout West Virginia D. Give me the Mountaineers to win on the money line laying a little wood.
Texas Tech Red Raiders at Arkansas Razorbacks (+107)
This is the game of the day, if you ask me. This game features a couple of teams that I have had my eye on all season long as dark horse Final Four teams. They both play in good leagues, and they both have shown the ability to beat elite teams. With the South Regional chalked full of upsets, the winner of this game is going to be prohibitive favorites in the next round against the winner of Florida and Oral Roberts, and with Purdue and North Carolina both gone in the top half of the South bracket, the path to the Final Four is one that could be very attainable for both of these teams.
So, where do I draw the line in a game between two teams that I absolutely love? Momentum. Arkansas has it, and Texas Tech doesn’t. The Razorbacks are playing their best basketball of the season at just the right time, and they have reeled off wins in 10 of their last 11 games. They had little trouble in the second half against Colgate, against a Raiders team that was 14-1 on the year, pulling away late for a blowout win. The Razorback’s resume is dotted with teams playing, and winning, in the NCAA tournament, with wins over North Texas, Abilene Christian, Oral Roberts, Missouri, Florida, and Alabama.
The dance continues.

For the Red Raiders, they stumbled to the finish line of the regular season, as they went just 3-5 in their last 8 games. Going back to February 1st, Texas Tech only has one win over a team that made the NCAA tournament, with a win over Texas, and we saw how Texas finished their year, as they are already heading home. The Big 12 was great this year, but somehow Texas Tech managed to navigate the league without beating many of the top teams. Tech beat Oklahoma and Texas both twice, but outside of that, all of their Big 12 wins came over teams like Iowa State, Kansas State, and TCU. Chris Beard is one heck of a coach, but Texas Tech should not be favored in this game. Back the Razorbacks as dogs and get paid!
