College football teaser picks: Best teaser legs for Week 2

Houston Cougars defensive lineman D'Anthony Jones (44) reacts after sacking Texas Tech Red Raiders quarterback Tyler Shough (12) during the first half at NRG Stadium college football

College football is back in full swing, and last week’s huge slate certainly didn’t disappoint. As we get ready for Week 2, we’ve got tons of great content coming. We of course have free picks on the side and total for all the big games, which you can view in our ‘NCAAF picks‘ tab. Make sure to also catch up on all our analysis articles like this one under our ‘college football news‘ section.

Today, we’re talking teasers. Personally, I much prefer to bet teasers in the NFL, where points are more valuable. But I understand that plenty of people are going to bet college football teasers regardless, so we may as well make sure you’re on the best ones. Let’s dive right into my favorite handful of legs for Week 2:

Iowa +10.5 (6-point tease from +4.5) over Iowa State

I always like to use my teaser legs in games where points are going to be at a premium. A bitter rivalry game with a low total certainly fits that bill. Getting Iowa up through the key numbers of 7 and 10 and into double digits seems like a wise move to me. The Hawkeyes just demolished Indiana 34-6, and forced Hoosiers quarterback Michael Penix Jr. into throwing three interceptions. Penix had only four interceptions all of last season. With the defense and ground game that Iowa has, I don’t see them losing this game by multiple touchdowns. Iowa State just beat FCS school Northern Iowa by six, so I don’t see them beating Iowa by more than 10 in such a big game here.

Wyoming -1 (6-point tease from -7) over Northern Illinois

44.5 is about as low of a total as you’ll see for a college football game these days. In fact, it’s the lowest total on the board for non-option teams (Navy vs Air Force is slightly lower). Wyoming is going to play very slow and conservative here, so if you like them in this game then they make some sense as a teaser leg. In their opener, the Cowboys attempted 26 passes while running the ball 43 times. They won that opener by three points, and are probably going to play in a lot of low-scoring games this season. Northern Illinois ran the ball 42 times in their first game while only attempting 17 passes, so this contest seems very likely to be decided by about a field goal.

Houston -2.5 (6-point tease from -8.5) over Rice

This one doesn’t have quite as low a total as the previous two games, but you’d be getting down through the two most important numbers of 3 and 7. Rice is another team with an abysmal passing game that is going to try to just run out the clock here. In their first game against Arkansas, Rice had 39 rush attempts despite the fact that they only averaged 2.1 yards per carry. Clearly, they aren’t going to abandon the run. Although Arkansas pulled away in the fourth quarter, the strategy actually worked for a while. The game was tied 17-17 after three quarters. If you like Houston here, just be aware that they might not be able to run up the score too much.
